5 weeks pregnant and spotting? What does it mean?

Hi Mums,

I am 5 weeks pregnant today. I had spotting but this blood for thicker than the implantation one and a bit darker. Also, this didn’t have any clots or anything. The bleeding happened in the morning then stopped. Again in the evening this happened. It’s not a deluge of blood but when I wipe a drop surly comes out. I don’t have any pregnancy symptoms as such and no cramps. Can someone tell me what this is? I am surely stressed now. Any advice would be appreciated.

This is one of those situations that could go either way. Bleeding can be completely normal and some people get it for weeks or months, it could be due to implantation, a pool of blood or just one of the random things that happen in pregnancy. For others it can be a sign of miscarriage. At 5 weeks it’s too early for a scan so there’s not much you can do apart from monitor it and wait, bit of it gets worse you could go to your epu or gp for advice and they may do bloods.

Does implantation happen even after you’ve got a positive pregnancy test?

@adya1012 I've had this twice at 5 weeks, once resulted in a miscarriage and the other was fine. They were the same in terms of the type of blood and the amount. Both times I had a scan at 6 weeks with EPU and both times I was put on progesterone. Hope it works ok for you xx

Hey, like the pp, it can be for a variety of reasons and go either way. In two of my pregnancies I bled like this for the first 9 weeks.
Monitor it, I found it good to keep notes, so if I had to recount it to a professional it was all written down.
EPU will be your go to for help.

Thanks for replying. This is quite stressful and it’s probably not helping. 😥

Does implantation happen even after you’ve got a positive pregnancy test?

Implantation doesn't but you can bleed for other reasons.. breakthrough bleeding at the time your period would have been due, cervical irritation, hematomas etc

But as PP said it unfortunately can go either way at this stage. I completely understand how anxious a time it is, I had a MC in June and the limbo part was the worst bit of all.

If you get painful cramps or the bleeding gets worse I'd speak to your GP, good luck OP xx

Update: HCG levels 5 weeks came back at 11,392. However at 6+2 I had spotting again. Very similar to the first one. No cramps or lumps but just mucusy pale blood. The last time I spotted, a day prior I had a very tight deadline and massive mental stress. This time a day prior I was at a day long event. Can stress both mental and physical cause this?

Correction 6 weeks* not 6+2

I had a full on period at the correct time early in my pregnancy. Similarly I had spotting at a wedding when it was a long day in hot weather.

I spoke with obstetrics subsequently and they felt both were very common and very normal.

Stress isn't causing it. It could be a subchorionic haematoma. A pocket of blood trapped behind the placenta which is slowly coming out and the placenta is still attempting to attach.

Hi op, have you got any updates at all? Currently going through this myself and going out of my mind with worry. X
