Nasty fall - wwyd?

Hi everyone,

Im 11 weeks pregnant today and took a really nasty fall. I was stood on the edge of my bath to get a spider on the ceiling and lost balance. I hit my leg and stomach hard against the edge of the bath and landed on my shoulder on the floor.

I was winded and very shaken on the floor for a little while. I had no lasting pain in my stomach when I got up, however my arm was still severely painful so I went to a minor injuries walk in who have found I have a fractured shoulder, but they didn't have any resources to check the baby.

I have a 12 week scan Friday 24th, would you wait until then or try the EPU or book a private scan tomorrow? I know with private scans you're supposed to leave the scans 2 weeks apart which is why I wondered if the EPU would even look at me? I know nothing can really be done but I am feeling anxious and would rather have answers now.

Yes of course call EPU

Otto223 · 13/01/2025 21:39

Or call you midwife who should sort something for you

AmyW9 · 13/01/2025 21:39

That sounds very painful! Please try not to worry. Baby is very cushioned and so small at that stage. I'd wait until the 12 week scan, but perhaps call your midwife for a second opinion too. I'm sure you'll be fine :-)

how certain are you of dates and do you know if you're rhesus positive or negative? May be worth asking about anti-d if your Rh-ve.

Chica1990 · 13/01/2025 21:47

@Otto223 my leaflet said to call if I was over 16 weeks, do you think try anyway? It said before then to try an and e or 111 (who referred me to minor injuries).

@AmyW9 it was! I don't know how I'm going to manage as my son still wakes in the night and very much wants me. I've had a few people say the same, I just hate the idea of waiting and then getting bad news.

@Greybeardy Very certain of dates as I had a private scan before Xmas. I'm positive blood type and didn't need this my first pregnancy, I assumed I wouldn't need it for further pregnancies?

At 11 weeks the uterus is still entirely contained within the pelvis and so protected by the pelvic bones. It's very very unlikely that a fall like that could threaten a pregnancy. Maybe call your midwife in the morning and ask their advice, but I'd be very confident all is well.

Otto223 · 13/01/2025 22:02

You can always call your midwife or EPU whenever you are concerned. They will tell you over the phone whether it is something to worry about. I’ve had such good experience with EPU it my pregnancy, if you’re worried and it’ll put your mind at ease then just give them a call

lemonsherbert86 · 13/01/2025 22:06

I would call the EPU.
As a pp has said, the baby is very cushioned in there so it's unlikely any damage has been done but it's not worth over a week of fretting in my opinion

WonderingWanda · 13/01/2025 22:13

That sounds like a horrible fall. Your baby is very well protected. Standing on the edge of the bath is quite a dangerous thing to do at any time let alone whilst pregnant so please be a bit more careful.

tediber · 13/01/2025 22:22

You could call for advice but I doubt they'll ask to see u. I was in a car accident at 16weeks and really worried. Hospital cldnt have been less concerned. They said I was to only go in if I were bleeding or had severe stomach cramps. Everything was fine in the end and I hope it is for you too 🤞🏻

Ah same boat. I'm 31 weeks and my DD is two, she still wakes every few hours. I'm trying not to think about the whole new levels of exhaustion coming my way!

Chica1990 · 14/01/2025 18:13

Well I tried the EPU all day and couldn't get through, I will continue tomorrow. @tediber i think you're right and I'm sorry to hear about your accident and experience, I'm glad everything was ok for you. I really think it's a case of they think there's nothing they can do but it means much more to us.

@WonderingWanda im kicking myself now but it was purely to reach the ceiling and I never find myself on the edge usually. I should have known better as I am clumsy normally but even more so this pregnancy. I have dropped and broken multiple plates and glass Tupperware, make up I'm simply holding goes flying out my hand, etc. it's ridiculous.
