How accurate is an early gender scan at 16 weeks?

I went for an early gender scan at 16 weeks and found out we are having a girl. We are very excited but when I share the news with anyone in my family the response has been "really? I was so convinced you were having a boy! That's when they got it wrong". This was said in front of my 7 year old too so now she keeps saying she might be having a little brother. I know it really doesn't matter as long as baby is healthy but im impatient and just want to know.

I'm 20 weeks tomorrow but still have a week and a half until my anomaly scan. How accurate is a gender scan at 16 weeks? Does anyone know what they're looking at with the scan? Because I really can't tell lol.

Yep, that's a girl

I have three children (two boys and a girl) and have found out the sex at 16 weeks with all of them. All of the scans were correct and your scan looks exactly like my daughter's, so I would be confident the sonographer is correct. In my experience with male scans it's a very obvious penis and nothing suggests on your scan that it's a boy.

Google image search ultrasound hamburger and hot dog and it'll show you what you are looking for!

My 16 week scan with my boy he was legs apart waving his willy at the camera! It couldn't have been more obvious if he tried! That's a girl!

In that pose you'd definitely see if she was a boy. I've had 3 boys and it's very obvious

Mine was accurate at 16 weeks but baby was super cooperative with legs akimbo basically. I knew she was a girl before the sonographer made a comment as there was clearly nothing else there between the legs and I could see the 3 lines people talk about. The sonographer also used very certain positive affirming language.

A friend of mine was told girl at 3 different scans and ended up having a boy. Massive shock but looking back now she says she never actually got a really good look herself and the sonographers always expressed difficulty getting a clear view. They also used language like 'I think', 'most likely', 'I'm.pretty sure' etc

What did your gut say at the scan?

Mine was accurate at 16 weeks also.

Thank you all for the reassurance! I also looked up the suggestion about hamburger and hotdog and can finally see what I was meant to be looking for haha. I feel much more confident that we're having a girl 🩷

I was sure going into the ultrasound that we were having a boy because this pregnancy is completely different from my first. Everyone around me said boy too and still are which I think had thrown me off. But we are over the moon to be having another girl!

Congratulations!

I am currently pregnant with DD2 and I too was absolutely convinced this one was a boy as the pregnancy has been so different to my first!

We were told that my 3rd child was a boy. When a baby girl popped out everyone was very surprised!!

I can't remember whether my scan was at 20 weeks or slightly before. I do remember that the sonographer said words to the effect of 'sorry, it does look like you will be having a 3rd boy' I think that it is pretty rare that they get it wrong however.

Congratulations on your little one OP!
