Early scan no sign of pregnancy

Hi everyone,

I am just looking for some advice or to see if anyone has been in the same situation and what their outcome was.

I have pcos, so my periods are extremely irregular and I haven't had one since October but this is perfectly normal for me. At the start of the week I started being sick and sore breasts etc, so my partner wanted me to test. The test was positive!

I spoke to my GP and she suggested I book an early scan due to the irregularity of my periods as we weren't sure how far along I actually am.

I went for the scan yesterday- had an internal scan and the sonographer said there was currently no signs of pregnancy, no sac etc but also no signs of rpoc or a puesdo sac. My lining was at 13mm thickness. She queried that I might just be too early. Afterwards I took the clearblue digital dates test and it showed pregnant 2-3 which would be about 4-5 weeks pregnant.

Has anyone had a scan around this time and not seen anything? We have waited so long for this moment and now it's just a worry.

Thanks ☺️

Do you have to go back in two weeks? When I was very early pregnant they still saw the sac and fetal pole.

OverTheRainbow18 · 12/01/2025 12:39

Did they take your HCG levels? It may just been that it's too early to see anything. 4 weeks is very early to have a scan, it's common not to be able to see anything until closer to 6 weeks.

No it was a private scan, I left feeling very confused to be honest. It feels like it's just a waiting game now for me to see what happens. It's now really hard to not think of anything else 🤦‍♀️

No it was a private scan, wondering if I should contact my gp tomorrow and ask for my hcg to be checked?

Not to be alarmist but i would want to rule out an ectopic. Suggest you do contact your GP.

This is completely normal if you are around 4 weeks. Happened to my sister, nothing on ultrasound at that stage, normal pregnancy followed.

Lavenderrose92 · 12/01/2025 15:39

This sounds really normal as it’s too early to be seen on scan?
unless your bleeding or in strong pain doesn’t sound like anything to worry about and your probs only 4-5 weeks

sel2223 · 12/01/2025 15:45

You won't see anything at 4-5 weeks, maybe a thickening of the uterus wall at the very most.
It's just far too early (I appreciate you didn't know you were so early).

5-6 weeks you would hopefully see the gestational sac and then the yolk sac and fetal pole. You wouldn't expect to see an embryo and heartbeat till between 6 and 7 weeks.

The best time to have an early scan is after 8 weeks as there is a lot more to see and also the odds of MC drop significantly once you've seen a healthy heartbeat over 8 weeks.

Before 8 weeks it is still the highest risk time in pregnancy and only time can tell you if the pregnancy is viable and healthy.

toastofthetown · 12/01/2025 15:46

The Clearblue tests weeks aren't always reliable. The ones I took never said anything other than 3+ weeks when they should been reading 1-2 weeks.

You would just randomly want to rule out ectopic despite not having any symptoms of this whatsoever? Imagine the burden on the EPU if everyone did that....

completely agree. There’s no bleeding or strong pain so they shouldn’t rescan until 8 weeks

Thank you for everyone's responses, I'll just try to keep myself busy for the next 4 weeks and then book in for another scan ❤️

I just wanted to update everyone, especially for people who may experience a similar situation. I had another scan today (NHS) and seen our little bean who is currently measuring around 6+5 weeks and had a very strong heartbeat ❤️.

What wonderful news! Congratulations, @dannd ! 😊

I had a scan at 5 weeks and saw nothing. Went back two weeks later at 7 weeks and saw a baby and heartbeat! Try not to worry x

maria2bela1 · 31/01/2025 18:58

Ok so it could be one of 2 things;
You're either too early, if 4 weeks along I would expect to see anything more than a thickening.

Or you've had either a blighted ovum or MMC, meaning the body has already started miscarrying without you knowing it, but I'd think likely you're just too early. The thickening of the womb would kind of confirm in uterine pregnancy and rule out ectopic.

happygalbetty · 31/01/2025 19:22

I had a scan at 9 weeks and was barely visible, I wouldn't worry too much, just book a scan for a few weeks time :)

Congratulations! Amazing news! 💞
