waters breaking?

I was out with my other half and he had several drinks, I had 2 small glasses of red wine, anyway he walked into a lamppost and I couldn't stop laughing. Suddenly I realised that I was very wet and rushed home. I smelled my trousers and they didn't smell of pee, also I had just been to the toilet 5 mins before. I went to the hospital where midwife monitered baby's heartbeat and sent me home because his head wasn't engaged. Thing is I know I didn't pee myself cos it felt different, didn't smell, and now my belly is softer and people have remarked that I look smaller which I have also noticed. Is any of this possible? It has been a wierd pregnancy so far, I am 38 weeks.

Did she do an internal check as well ? midwife confirmed that I had lost fluid/ waters had broken she did an internal first and then a monitor.
If you are not happy go back and ask for another check .

is any water leaking now?

could have been wee, especially if you were laughing a lot

if nothing leaking now, then it is not your forewaters, IMO

did you have an internal?

Vikky · 04/05/2008 18:52

She didn't do an internal, I've read loads today about ph tests that they normally do aswell, but I didn't get. She put question marks on the notes after everything I said so think she was dubious of everything I told her for some reason.

is the water still leaking? if not, then it is not your waters that went. or if they did it was a hindwater leak which iwll replenish and reseal

how many weeks are you?

Divvy · 04/05/2008 18:59

Would have thought they would at least do the "cough" test. Speculum thingy in and look while you do big cough.

Vikky · 04/05/2008 19:01

no more leaks yet, am just over 38 weeks. Whats a hindwater leak?

you can get a small leak, that comes from the bag of waters behind the baby;s head, it is not the same as your membranes rupturing

amniotic fluid is constantly made and replaced, so if your membranes had ruptured you would be leaking fluid now and unable to stop the flow lke you can with urine.

As I've said before on these threads about waters - there are quite a few of them if you look Vikky - I lost the entirety of my waters without gushing and in two lots. I was surprised as there was less than I would have expected. I leaked one night, went in for checking (cautious, 1st baby and all), they would not examine me because of the risk of infection (turned out to be quite correct not to do so). I had absolutely no leaking at all until 24 hours later when I had another significant leak.
They also mentioned hindwaters/weeing to me the first time but I knew I hadn't wet myself!
I really wouldn't try and self-diagnose from advice on mumsnet, as when they scanned me after the second leak, I had no waters left and had to be induced (at 38+6).
I would at least call for some advice.

deaconblue · 04/05/2008 20:12

My hindwaters broke last week adn they confirmed this by doing a swab using a speculum. Although dd was born about 40 hours later the hospital have been concerned about infection and she had to have 4 hourly monitoring for the first 24 hours. I was told a baby should be delivered 18-36 hours after any water leak to minimise risk of infection. I would definitely get it checked again.

fishie · 04/05/2008 20:20

my waters went with no accompanying contractions, but kept on leaking so not the same as you vikky. am sure i've also heard about leaks 'resealing' so may turn out to be not yet for you.

shoppingbags you had a really good experience and i am very pleased for you. but i ended up with a four day induction and a cs so am a bit more pessimistic. to say that one must be induced because of infection risk and then shove hands, speculums, swabs up is ridiculous.

vikky get a scan but find out what their protocol is re induction for prom (premature rupture of membranes), it varies a lot.

excitedfornumber2 · 05/05/2008 08:59

Hello i just wanted to share my experience, in my last pregnancy i had PROM which started at 30 weeks, it happened when i went to the toilet, but after i had a wee. they did internals and swabs, and could see a trickle. i did go into labour but they stopped it with pethadine, the baby obviously wasnt ready to come, i was constantly monitored due to the risk of infectin, but managed to go to 37 weeks, when all of my waters gushed, and i delivered my DS. i would ask for some more checks because you need to be sure you havent lost to much fluid, etc.

excitedfornumber2 · 05/05/2008 09:00

i also knew it wasnt a wee, as it felt like it was coming from a different place, IYSWIM

Vikky · 05/05/2008 12:31

Well I have a midwife appointment on weds so will discuss it fully with her then, baby was wriggling and kicking me black and blue last night so he seems ok. Am keeping a close eye on how my body feels.

be aware though- the policy here is that if your waters do go and youre not engaged they induve (eva07 had her lo today after being kept in for that, they felt danger of cord becoming trapped).

I would personally raise as a question.

take temp every 4 hours as well, just to be sure re infection
