What is ectopic pain like

Hi everyone! I don't know if I'm being paranoid but I've been having really bad cramps since before my period was due, I'm now 4 weeks and 3 days pregnant and still getting them. I'm worried that the pain is being caused by an ectopic pregnancy or something else being wrong, the pain is like bad period cramps. For those that have had an ectopic pregnancy what did it feel like and how far along was you when it started?

I've had 2 and I'd describe the pain more like a stitch. I also didn't test positive as early as 4w3d. Is the pain on 1 side? Cramping across your stomach sounds more like a normal early pregnancy symptom. Good luck!

@ThatIsABigSon I wouldn't say what I'm feeling feels like a stitch at all tbh, it's like period cramps I'd say. It's more to the right but is all over I think. I didn't know ectopic pregnancies meant you wouldn't get a positive test as early, we were trying for a few months so I know when I ovulated and I got a positive test at 10DPO which was 5 days before my period was due. Thank you for the answer :)

I've had miscarries and 2 ruptured ectopics

Miscarriage pain feels more like period cramps - low down in uterus

Ectopics feel more like a stitch - one sided - towards hip area. When the ectopics ruptured pain was take your breath away can't stand or walk actual writhing in agony pain that no amount of painkillers can take the edge off

With both ectopics they were live - so had heartbeats and hcg levels were perfectly normal

When mine ruptured t was like extreme trpped wind. As pp said I was in agony (vomiting due to the pain) and couldn't stand.

Spaghetti127 · 03/01/2025 07:22

I'd second the pain being closer to trapped wind type pain. I didn't actually have any pain until it ruptured at which point I was in and out of consciousness. Only warning sign was shoulder pain about a min before. This was at 7 weeks 5 days.
I had a positive test early as well as we were tracking so not sure why that would be an issue.
I hope all is ok for you xxx

I agree with the above. Mine, when it happened, felt more instestinal than womb, if that makes sense. Very sharp pain, like I had extreme trapped wind. I fainted it was so painful. I hadn’t had any symptoms until it ruptured. But, if you’re worried, a private reassurance scan will confirm everything is developing in the right place.

LucyLou0527 · 03/01/2025 14:30

the doctors weren’t sure if mine was ectopic or just a normal miscarriage but the pain I felt was excruciating at times, it was more one sided and I couldn’t even stand up straight I had to hunch over when I walked anywhere and it didn’t feel anything like period cramps.

wishing you the best of luck xx

Mine was a stabbing sort of pain, especially when I went to the toilet. I also had quite heavy bleeding from 4 weeks and a very low hcg (5) at first beta (4 weeks).

I’m 5 weeks pregnant and for the past 2-3 days I have had pain in the tip of my shoulder, no cramping or anything just lower back pain (which I also had during first pregnancy.) Has anyone else ever experienced this?

A quick google search and it says could be ectopic pregnancy. Not sure if I’m thinking too much in to it. I don’t know what to do as surely 5 weeks would be too early to see anything on a scan anyway

Chillilounger · 11/01/2025 17:02

I had been bleeding for several days and then had strong left sided pain. I needed emergency surgery. If you think you have an ectopic phone the hospital emergency maternity number.

They do internal scans at 5 weeks. I needed one in every subsequent pregnancy post ectopic to check baby was in the right place.

I've had two ectopic pregnancies. IME the shoulder tip pain occurred after I had started losing consciousness several times and was in a lot of pain. The shoulder tip pain is due to internal bleeding and the diaphragm being irritated so you would normally be experiencing other symptoms. The fact that you are feeling well and it has lasted 2-3 days with no other symptoms would suggest that it's not an ectopic. However I'm not medically trained and of course you should see a medical professional if you are concerned.
