Please Look At My Scan Pic- Not Sure What's What!

I had an early scan today due to slight bleeding a few weeks ago. Everything was clear(ish) on screen- one small blob for a head, and a bigger blob for body. Im only 7+2 so obviously too early to show anything big.

I was given this picture, and assumed baby was just the blob above the mark 'baby', so what is the long thing coming down?! Surely not its body as a scan with DS at the same stage was much smaller than this?!

Can anybody please try point out to me what is what?! I thought LO was just that fuzzy round blob!

Nbg · 02/05/2008 20:08

Oh blimey!

Ermmm, at a guess I would say the longer part on the left is the body and the other bit is the head.

chinchi · 02/05/2008 20:11

Thanks Nbg

Thats what I was thinking, although I thought it would be far too early to see any of the body as large as that.

Ive been looking at the round blob all day thinking ah how cute, and thinking the longer bit was some scuzz that got in the way!

cosima · 02/05/2008 20:13

I would say the 'blob' at the top is not the baby, the longer bit is, with the head at the bottom of the pic

chinchi · 02/05/2008 20:15

Thanks Cosima- a friend of mine asked if the baby's head was at the bottom and I told her I couldnt see it

Im going to have fun sussing this one out!

It will be the yolk sac surely?

DumbledoresGirl · 02/05/2008 20:15

I think all of it is your baby. Imagine a baby sideways on, head at the top, looking to the right but curled up a bit.

If you look in pregnancy books, a foetus at 7 weeks is quite blob like and there are not many human features to be seen.

DumbledoresGirl · 02/05/2008 20:18

Or maybe not. Have a look at this picture of a 7 week old foetus. Here The nect isn't really long enough for the head to bend, so maybe what I said earlier can't be right.

Lovely photo though, dont you think?

chinchi · 02/05/2008 20:18

Thanks again ladies

On the monitor there were two distinct blobs- one for head, one for body, but certainly couldnt see any human features.

Its this long bit thats thrown me. With DS the scan showed a feotus around the same size as that small blob, but now there is a huge thing added to this scan!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 02/05/2008 20:22

It's the yolk sac for sure!
With my scan t 7 weeks is everyone thought the baby had a skinny body and massive head. The skinny bit was the baby, lol.

cosima · 02/05/2008 20:24

if you look at the top of the longer blob you can see a little line/curl, that looks like the legs to me my scan pick which was very clear, legs looked like this, the dark spot in the 'bottom ' area is prolly the bladder. the other blob is the yolk sac.
oh . and..

Its a boy!

chinchi · 02/05/2008 20:27

Another boy?! That will mean 3 males and 1 female in the house! How will I cope?! OK, one of them is a male budgie, but still counts!

cosima · 02/05/2008 20:43

A budgie? no woonder your scan pic is so weird

JodieG1 · 02/05/2008 20:56

I had internal scans at that stage and you could see the baby really clearly, it's deceiving as you think it's just a blob but it isn't

chinchi · 02/05/2008 20:59

LMAO cosima

It was an internal I had JodieG1! My eyes are going squiffy looking at it

minster · 02/05/2008 20:59

The big black thing is the gestational sac (which contains the amniotic fluid), the white blob at the top is the yolk sac which will be resorbed by the baby by the end of the first trimester (when the placenta takes over), the blob at the bottom is the baby

chinchi · 02/05/2008 21:02

Yay! My baby is a big blob now!

Thanks Minster
