Contractions or Braxton Hicks?

How do you reliably tell the difference between contractions and braxton hicks?

I’m 38+4 weeks, 2nd pregnancy but was induced with my first so I don’t know how it feels to go into labour naturally. I am feeling contractions which feel like period pain in my lower belly, but they’re not regularly spaced or consistent in length. Does this sound like braxton hicks? I had assumed so but keep reading online that BH are uncomfortable but not painful - these are painful but not agonising, about period pain level.

My baby is breech so I don’t want to risk leaving things too long…!

As your baby is breech I'd ring triage and get checked. Low period cramps are how things started for me. It might be Braxton hicks, some in people they do feel more painful, but it could also be early labour.

Given your baby is breech definitely get checked out. My Braxton Hicks were uncomfortable as in everything felt very tight so what you have sounds more like what I had when I went into labour. Wishing you all the best!
