Do I need a new mattress for next to me crib?

I bought a tutti bambini cozee next to me crib second hand for my son (now 3) but bought a new mattress. I'm due in a few weeks with my second baby and will be reusing the next to me crib again, my question is do I really need to get a new mattress again? My son used it for about 8/9 months. Wondering what others did?

100% you should buy a new mattress- its not worth the risk

All of the SIDS prevention advice recommend a new mattress for each baby. I don't think I could take the chance personally. Have a read of the evidence and see what sits right with you.

Lullaby Trust website has lots of good info about mattress/cot use etc for Babies... personally I'd buy a new mattress.

I didn't, I used the same one with both babies. As far as I could tell, the lullaby trust says it's better to have new for each baby but the risk is very low when shared between siblings in the same family. Our first baby had barely used it as wouldn't sleep in the crib.

The Lullaby Truat advice is specifically aimed at second hand mattresses from outside the home. If it was new to you and you've stored it indoors (not a garage or loft) and it hasn't got damp at all it will be fine to reuse. If it may have got damp then replace.

We've always used the same mattress, have 3 children with fairly big age gaps (9,6,1). I'm aware of the rules, but really don't understand the risk. We live in a very clean, non-smoking, well looked after home. But the rules are there for a reason, it's down to you to assess the risk for yourself and your family.

Di you mind if I jump in because I can't find this online, what age does the new mattress guidance apply to? I'm planning to get a new mattress for the next to me but the cot bed that was used by DD from 7 months-4 do I need to replace that too, or will it be OK at 7 months? Always used a mattress protector, only been used by DD, stored in spare bedroom, still looks new.

I'm pregnant with my third and she'll be getting her brother's cot bed mattress (he's 3) - not bothering with a next to you crib as all of mine have ended up in bed with me anyway so we just put the cot up in my room.
I'd expect it'll stay a clothes dumping ground for the first few months while she is sick/shits on my lovely one year old king size mattress 😂
