Growth Scan Measurements

Hello all, just after similar situations and what the outcome was after birth please! This is my second baby, had a growth scan today at 31+2 as my tummy measurement had dropped from the 75th-25th percentile. I wasn’t concerned as this happened with my daughter but when we went in she had a big tummy, big head, just over average femur length but this time my babies legs are measuring 31+4, abdominal - 31+5 which is nearly spot on dates but the head circumference was 34+5 which I assume is what’s pushing it up overall to just below the 90th percentile. Did anybody else have this at the same stage? I have a follow up scan in 2 weeks time! Baby is currently estimating 4lbs 3oz based off these measurements, if you have been through similar what did your baby weigh at birth?

So your bump is measuring small but the estimated weight is large for dates? Is that correct? And it appears to be the head circumference that is larger?

I always think these scans need to be taken with an extra large pinch of salt.

Mummymoo2022 · 30/12/2024 21:03

@Planits yes, so bump is measuring smaller, still measured 30cm at 31 weeks but because I was ahead on my 28 week appointment I dropped percentiles which is why a growth scan was booked in. Obviously the estimated weight is estimated through all 3 measurements but appears the only high measurement I have is the head circumference so was just wondering what other people’s experiences were, whether they did end up having bigger babies or if the body just caught up with the head and had average sized babies!

My baby’s head measurement was huge all the way through, still tracking at 98th percentile now - we need to get hats two sizes up, and baby clothes that zip up rather than going over the head as the neck holes aren’t big enough!

Mummymoo2022 · 30/12/2024 21:18

@RolyPolyNiceAndSlowly oh bless! How much did your baby weigh when born and at what gestation if you don’t mind me asking? Did they measure average everywhere else other than the head?

Average abdominal (about 45th-60th) all the way through, and femur was always slightly lower (25th-35th). Head always ranged from 85 upwards!

Born just before 40 weeks, 7lb 9oz. Currently about 50th percentile all over apart from the massive head. 😁

I am currently sitting here unpicking jumper neck holes to add press stud openings - happy new year! 😂

I had a million growth scans. Bump too big then bump too small, growth scan 20th centile, then growth scan 60th. I had a growth scan at 20th centile 2 weeks before my over 9lb 80th centile baby was born. Apparently was also short but was also over 90th centile for length. Not one of my bump or growth scans were within 'range' from the last.

@RolyPolyNiceAndSlowly This baby looks like its abdominal and femur are around the 50th/60th percentile but head definitely looks to be around the 90th+ so I may well be doing what you are doing in the future! I’m only 31+3 weeks so let’s see if the rest of the body catches up to the head or if the head keeps growing!

my daughter was born 39+1 and she was 8lbs 3oz so I’m not expecting a small baby I just don’t want a giant 10 pounder haha!

Happy New Year!!

@FlyingHighFlyingLow I had a couple of growth scans with my daughter because I was too small and then too big, she had a massive growth spurt at the end, born at 39+1 at 8lbs 3oz! But they were pretty accurate with weights with her which is why I’m curious of the head is all that’s upping the percentiles and this baby may be slightly smaller?!

can’t believe you were told the 20th percentile and then 2 weeks later had such a big baby! How far were you when you gave birth?!

I had scans every week from around 27 weeks. LVD scan one week, growth added the next. Threatened with the oh baby not growing, need induction etc etc but all was great - fluid was good, blood flow good, CTG tracings perfect. Literally just the growth scans and they have a large margin of error. In the end they let me go naturally to 41 weeks.

My 39 week growth scan was 20th centile. My 41 week growth scan was 50th centile. Born 2 days after that 41 week scan on 80th centile. My bump apparently shrunk though according to my midwife from 35 weeks onwards.
