Induction advice needed 37+1 with GD

Hi all,

I’ve just received a phone call from my midwife saying that I should be induced next week. I’m 37+1 weeks pregnant and I have gestational diabetes (GD). I’m feeling a little overwhelmed and unsure about what’s the right thing to do.

A few days ago, I had a growth scan, and the midwife mentioned that the baby is a normal size and everything looks good. However, the midwife who called today seems to think induction is necessary, not just because of size, but due to other risk factors.

I’ve been struggling to control my diet, and I’m not on medication for GD. The midwife did mention concerns, but I couldn’t help but feel like she was sort of fear-mongering, which makes it harder to make a decision.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or have any advice? I just don’t know what’s best right now.

This should help present your situation clearly to others, allowing for easier discussion and advice. Let me know if you want to tweak anything!

What are the other risk factors? High, uncontrolled blood sugars are very risky to baby.
But, if your blood sugars are difficult to control I would think they'd introduce medication. Women on insulin for gestational diabetes are usually induced at around 38 weeks because of the risk of stillbirth. 37 weeks, not on insulin and a normal size baby is probably a bit early, but hard to say without all of the details. If blood sugars are really out of control I'd understand inducing early, but they can't be that bad if not on insulin. Could you request a meeting to discuss the pros and cons, and ask all of your questions?
