Severe morning sickness or HG

Merry Christmas everyone!

Hate to have to message on a day like today but I am feeling very unwell. I have had to leave all my family to go lay in bed. I have my husbands family staying over for a few nights, I started to make breakfast for everyone this morning and just started feeling really unwell. I woke up with an awful headache, I felt so dizzy, lightheaded, out of breath, sick again (already vomited this morning - it has been every morning now for the past week), I am 11 weeks and this is the worst it has been. My blood pressure is normal but I just feel so unwell, I even said to my mum I feel like I need to go A&E but I really don't want to leave my family on Christmas Day, especially my 2 year old son.

How do you actually know if you're having normal morning sickness symptoms or if you have HG? I have googled symptoms but they are all so similar and it's hard to tell. I do have very bad health anxiety so I am constantly worrying that I have HG. I also hate wasting doctors time so I always feel slightly embarrassed going A&E if it's nothing so so try to work it out myself.

I think I'd call 111 and just say you're getting symptoms that are unusual for you, you feel really unwell and can't carry on but don't know what to do for the best. They may just triage you to an out of hours doctor which would mean you could speak to a doctor on the phone - but you'd be at home rather than a waiting room while they work out what to do with you. If they recommend A&E then you know that's the best place for you to get the care you need.❤️

What shit timing! Hope you feel better soon 🤞🏼❤️

HG is like all day on and off or constant sickness/nausea not just morning time. If it goes after morning then I’d say not HG because it’s extreme.

Motherof1and2dogs · 25/12/2024 11:40

@Adamsapple89 it is all day and all night :( I vomit in the mornings only but the nausea is all day, I have my sick bowl with me 24/7. Movement makes it 10 times worse! Headaches are on and off also. Would you go A&E for this or get a doctors appointment when they next open?

Hi as a previous poster has said, call 111. Let them triage you for help, hope you feel better soon

ADHDHDHDHD · 25/12/2024 11:43

A&e cannot fix HG. If you are extremely dehydrated they can put you on a drip. Try to avoid that by drinking something anything to keep hydrated. Food you can live without but not water.
Sip different drinks to see which stays down.
If you are vomiting back up everything you ingest then yes that's HG.

Adamsapple89 · 25/12/2024 11:47

It does sound like HG, if you’re worried call 111 I wouldn’t go to a&e unless you’re scared something is seriously wrong it is for emergencies

RabbitsEatPancakes · 25/12/2024 11:51

I always thought HG was when you literally can't keep anything down. The only reason for a&e would be for dehydration so you are put on a drip. They don't do much else unless you're an extreme case.

If you've only had it a week, are you sure it's not just a bug, there's lots going round?

Motherof1and2dogs · 25/12/2024 12:24

@RabbitsEatPancakes I've had sickness for about 3 weeks, the vomiting was every other day, but now it's become daily, all day nausea, headaches and just feeling dizzy and so exhausted. I just like to get second opinions before I see anyone or call 111, I am able to keep food and drink down which is something that makes me think I don't have HG but I have all of the other symptoms which are also the same as normal pregnancy sickness 😩

@ADHDHDHDHD luckily I am keeping all food down and drink... it's just the water I have in the morning that comes back up but hopefully that is normal morning sickness. The nausea however is all day and is so debilitating and making me so weak :(

Call 111 for advice if it will help you x

My midwife said if I was unable to keep any food or water down for 3 days then it is HG and to still call 111 to see if I needed to be on a drip. When I had HG I couldn't even keep small sips of water down, let alone any food.

Definitely speak to your GP for anti sickness medication, there's no need to struggle.

I'm in my third trimester and still vomit every morning, after a glass of water/coffee, I'm used to it now and know to have breakfast afterwards. I hope it eases up for you, that nausea feeling isn't pleasant.

Bramblecrumb · 25/12/2024 13:02

HG is classed officially as extreme vomiting - at my worst, I was vomiting literally 10+ times in a few hours - and even today at 36 weeks, I spewed down the car door while we were driving 🫠.

But pregnancy sickness support says crippling nausea should be considered HG, take a look at their website and you'll see the symptoms - it can be helped by medication most of the time. will say it shouldn't be making you dizzy and lightheaded though - that doesn't sound usual to me, unless you'd be throwing up so much that you were dehydrated. I'd give 111 a call as that sounds more unusual to me - at the beginning HG made me so weak I literally couldn't leave my bedroom for a few days but that's because I was vomiting 20+ times in a few hours.

winersrollingin · 25/12/2024 16:01

I lost 4kg in a week with hg. Went to doc to announce pregnancy and got weighed. Then went back cos couldn't stop vomiting. He weighed me again and put me on drugs. They old just took the edge off

Beeches24 · 25/12/2024 17:29

No, it's just regular morning sickness. HG is more debilitating.

PrincessAnne4Eva · 25/12/2024 17:39

It doesn't matter if it's morning sickness or HG, OP, if it's making you dizzy with headaches and unable to do normal activities then you need to get help. That constant nausea is awful and you can get help from a doctor. I had HG with all three of my PGs and didn't know where to turn with the first one. They can prescribe anti-nausea/sickness tablets for you if you explain how much this is affecting your life. How are you supposed to work when you can't actually sit up? PP's suggestion to call 111 is a good shout. I think some people don't realise how awful severe nausea can be and think only the vomiting is an issue. Good luck OP.

Motherof1and2dogs · 25/12/2024 17:50

@PrincessAnne4Eva thank you for this. The nausea is worse because you are waiting to be sick but nothing happens all day until the next morning. My sick bowl has become my best friend at the minute. Movement makes my nausea so much worse! Most of my Christmas today has been me in bed and every time I have got up to try and socialise I've had to lay back down :(
Trip to the doctors as soon as they are open! I wish I done this before Christmas :( I just thought it would pass but it's got worse

Sorry you're feeling so rubbish op. I know it's hours later but 111 won't do anything for you if you're keeping food down it's probably not HG, but that's not to say it won't become that; mine started as shocking nausea but at its worst I was vomiting more than a dozen times a day and couldn't even keep down the fluids from sucking an ice cube. Rest and eat what you can and get to the gp for anti sickness meds when they open back up
