Blood after intimacy

Hello. I'm currently 5 weeks pregnant, my first pregnancy. Yesterday after a week of not doing anything, me and my husband were intimate. I had no pain but right afterwards there was blood and little drops of blood on the sheet. It was quite a lot of blood and it was bright red which was obviously alarming, and still is to be honest. When I spoke to the midwives, they told me the early pregnancy unit wouldn't see me yet with me being only 5 weeks, but to keep an eye on it and if there's more blood or clots or pain then I need to go to A and E.

I've had no pain and no blood since. The blood wasn't flowing, it was more like there when I wiped but once I had cleaned it away it was gone, but with it being red and quite a lot, to be honest, I'm obviously concerned.

I have been told I've got cervical ectropion, so bleeding afterwards isn't unusual for me, but this just seemed like a lot more blood than what I'd usually have and obviously with me being pregnant it's scared the heck out of me. I've had absolutely no blood since so I'm hoping it was just irritation but does anyone else have any same experience or advice?

The midwives also told me to take a pregnancy test again next week, but if it's the case that the worst scenario happened, would a week be long enough for the test to be negative?

Thank you for any help

Hi OP

Didn't want to read and run. Everything is so much more vascular during pregnancy and with the ectropian, a bit more bleeding is common after intercourse.

It's reassuring you're not in any pain or losing clots etc. and it will likely settle on it's own soon.

I have a cervical polyp which bleeds terribly (bled at 26 weeks then last week at 33 weeks) after intercourse so we just haven't bothered 🤣 it was never a problem pre pregnancy and was identified when I went into have the bleeding checked out at 26 weeks. Each time I've bled a mixture of red and old blood for about 10 days 🙄

You could take a pregnancy test again in a week's time if you wish. After 6 weeks generally a heartbeat is visible so you could always book yourself a private scan at 7 weeks for reassurance? The NHS are unlikely to scan you unless you have worsening symptoms.

Hi there it's a labour ward midwife. I agree with the previous poster's advice. Pregnancy makes tissues more vascular and ectropions are known to cause bleeding. Keep an eye on it for now.
