Are hamsters safe during pregnancy?

Hello! We bought our DD a hamster today. It’s lovely - got it from the website pets4homes because there was a photo of it being handled, and it’s super friendly and settling in well. Only thing is, I’m 11 weeks pregnant and just googled whether handling hamsters during pregnancy is safe. The first thing that popped up was LCMV infections.. which can cause severe birth defects and miscarriage. I think it’s spread by mice, but hamsters can carry it. Obviously I have no idea if the house we got it from has mice ….

… has anyone heard of this before ? theres nothing on the nhs website …
am I over worrying?!

Only if you have it well done.

You are over worrying - but just to be on the safe side I would put your DH/DP in charge of hamster duties for the rest of your pregnancy!

You will be fine, they are fairly clean animals, they wee in one corner. You can wear gloves and wash hands after.

Definitely make sure it's cooked thoroughly, use a thermometer xx
