Hi there,

we’re trying to understand the risk of chicken pox and pregnancy.

im due at the end of March 2025 - and my niece has chicken pox. She has had them for 2 weeks and we think most of them are scanning over now.

im supposed to see her Christmas Day. I have had chicken pox as a child.

we’re trying to understand the risk of seeing her? And online seems to throw up different answers.

if there is any risk of harm to myself or the baby - we will make other arrangements, but in this being over cautious?

Chickenpox is contagious for 1 to 2 days before the rash starts and until the blisters have all dried and become scabs. The blisters usually dry and become scabs within 5 to 7 days of the onset of the rash.

I wouldn't worry two later. If you worry ask your GP or midwife for advice.

You'll be absolutely fine if you've had it. My little boy had it a couple of months ago when I was 16 weeks pregnant and I didn't catch it as I'd had it already. Plus the most contagious time is actually before the spots appear apparently.

I’m pregnant too and have a toddler in nursery. Chickenpox was doing the rounds at his nursery so I checked whether I needed to be worried with my midwife - she said that as I had chickenpox as a child I would most likely be immune (she did do a blood test which confirmed this). Meaning there was zero risk to unborn baby. The fact you have already had it and that your niece has had it for a while and the spots are scabbing should mean that it is safe for you to spend Christmas Day with her. If I were you, I’d spend Christmas as you’ve planned. But you could always give your midwife a call if you want to be super sure. Hope you all have a lovely Christmas x

My little one has chicken pox at the moment - my GP reassured me that there was virtually no risk if I’d already had chicken pox. We co-sleep, etc so i have no doubt I’ve had lovely germs rubbed all over me and the bump and all has been well.

If you've had chickenpox it's very low risk
If she got them 2 weeks sgo she won't be contagious anyway as they will have scabbed over before then

It's only if you haven't had it it's a problem op
