Does this sound right re gestational diabetes test?

I have 2DC who were 8LB 7oz and 8LB 13oz. Pregnancy wise I'm low risk, but high for birth. I didn't have gestational diabetes with either DC. I am a normal BMI, just under 21 and diabetes doesn't run in my family. My midwife told me that due to the size of DC at birth, I'd need a gestational diabetes test but that doesn't seem right to me? They were under 9lb at full term and I didn't have pre eclampsia either. Thoughts?

I did have GD and dd was delivered at 37 weeks weighing 8b 6oz.
However, I'm not little, dh is 6ft 6 and dd was never ever going to be a small baby.
I think sometimes they do err on the side of caution.
I'd do the test then forget about it.

Why wouldnt you do the test?

Eenameenadeeka · 13/12/2024 08:05

Wouldn't have thought they would be
Classed as large so does sound unusual but no harm in doing the test I suppose

I’m not particularly clued up on GD, but when I had my test it did take a whole morning but it was peace of mind. There’s no harm in doing the test imo.

I had the GD test some weeks back. I've never had elevated blood sugar levels myself and am a healthy BMI, however, type 1 diabetes does run in my family and I have a genetic condition which can predispose me to developping diabetes at some point so I was booked in for the test as a matter of routine. It was a bit of a pain since you have to wait a couple of hours between first and second blood tests, but I felt it was worth it for peace of mind. Thankfully my test came back negative.

@bruffin it's not that I wouldn't do it, I just don't feel like there's actually any need for me to do it if that makes sense?

I'm almost 6' and was over 8lbs at birth in the 1960s. My DH's first two kids were over 8lbs. My baby measured big but despite me saying all this and having no obvious symptoms nurse sent me for GD test. Well blow me over my first test was so high they sent me straight to the diabetic clinic.
Get the test.

I had FOUR GD tests because DD was measuring large. All negative. They were boring and inconvenient (and once they couldn't find a vein and took blood from my thumb which really flipping hurt) but it was fine, I was happier getting the reassurance. DD ended up being 10lb 13oz and the longest baby they'd ever delivered – but for no reason other than big babies run in our family! She's 50th centile for weight and 75th for height now at 6 so it was all a storm in a teacup.
