Train or Horse

I'm 26 weeks pregnant and at our 20 week scan, we were told it looks like we're having a girl, although we didn't clearly get the money shot (and just to advise- we're not worried about gender, just want a healthy baby).

At my midwife appointment today, it was mentioned following the doppler check that it sounds like a baby boys heartbeat. Boy apparently sounds like train and girl sounds like galloping horse.
Has anyone had this experience before? Is there any truth behind horse and train heartbeat sounds?

I'm not convinced myself, I've also heard a girl has a higher heart rate than a boy. But my baby had the heart rate that would typically indicate girl..he's a boy! And it's been confirmed on 2 scans which have been clear. Not saying your midwife is wrong! Especially as you couldn’t see for sure on the scan. Will you be having another scan or waiting until birth to find out? 😊

My untrained ear couldn't tell the difference.

I had a girl and sometimes it sounded to me like a galloping horse, other times a train

I didn’t hear this until I went for my 16-week check-up. When the midwife listened to the heartbeat, she asked if I knew what I was having. When I said we’re having a girl, she said ‘I could tell that from the heartbeat, it’s definitely a galloping horse!’

My son's heartbeat sounded like a galloping horse every time we heard it, to the point where two separate midwives pointed out we'd probably have a girl. I also had sweet cravings and a lot of morning sickness. We lost him at 19 weeks, but he was very much a beautiful little boy.

No, I don't think we'll have a follow up scan to check - only if a growth scan is needed. It'll be a fun guessing game though!

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss 🧡

In 'Expecting Better' (highly recommend!) she debunks the old wives tale that girls have a faster heart rate but I've never heard the train / horse theory!

My DH always laughed at me being able to correctly guess sex based on the sound (when watching stuff on TV or when in for reduced movements with my first) until we were pregnant with our second. As soon as he heard the heartbeat he looked at me and said “it’s a boy”. To me the two sound so distinctly different it’s obvious which is which, no idea if it’s some weird super skill or just fluke 😂

I love this! So glad I'm not going crazy about them sounding different 🤣
