Sore throat in pregnancy remedies

It's kills. Woke me up at 3am and now I'm knackered at work and can barely talk (I wfh, not infecting anyone).

The back of all the sore throat stuff says either "do not take if pregnant" or "consult your doctor before taking" (no wonder you can't get a GP appointment..). What can I take safely, please? I'm fed up.

I’m just going with paracetamol. It’s a pain relief and it is helping reduce it by 50% or so. It’s also anti-pyretic so helps reduce a fever I have brewing.

Honey and lemon helps too.

Paracetamol is my go to

remaininghopeful23 · 10/12/2024 15:16

You poor thing. Every illness feels so much worse in pregnancy for some reason😭 Paracetamol, and hot water with good quality honey and lemon. Honey can have antimicrobial effects as well as just being nice and soothing. Good dose of vitamin c from the lemon too! Any fevers contact maternity unit for advice. Feel better soon!

I'm the same! I've got some throat 'sweets' (i.e. no medicine in them!), paracetamol and hot honey / lemon drinks

Is it sore from being ill or overuse?
Gargle with dilute TCP
Inhale steam
Honey lemon and ginger

GiftWrappedSuburbanDreams · 10/12/2024 20:01

Gargle twice a day with warm salt water, I find this really can help
Manuka honey, just straight off the spoon
Hot honey, lemon and ginger drink
Paracetamol if you want to take medicine
And hope you feel better soon!

Buttercup syrup is good, natural and soothing.

Gargle a medicated mouthwash like Corsodyl

I've also been known to put anbesol liquid on a cotton bud and try to wipe it over the sore part, as its an anesthetic so numbs the pain. However, only any good if the soreness isn't too far down the throat and if your gag reflex isn't too strong.

Boots do some own brands throat pastilles that are basically just glycerin. It doesn't say anything on them about not to use when pregnant and they are extremely effective.

I’ve been using these all week

Gargle with warm salt water several times a day. It’s disgusting but it really does help.

Buy decent honey (small local brands ideally - quite a big issue with honey being watered down with various sugar alternatives these days) and have a teaspoon in warm herbal teas or on its own.

And then lots of non medicated throat lozenges and have whatever chemist medication is allowed (mine are all teens now so I’m sure its changed from my time).
