2 weeks behind on early scan

KBAJCE24 · 09/12/2024 10:07

Hello!

This is my first time posting to a forum and I have no clue how it works. Hoping for some people's experiences/ perhaps there's a sonographer cutting about. Long story:

I'd been TTC baby no.2. No 1 was quite a dramatic pregnancy and came after 4 years of infertility so we thought the sooner the better.

Since my baby my cycles have been horrendous and predominantly 19-21 days. LMP was Oct 19th and I got a positive test (questionable) on the night of CD 20 and definite positive on CD 21 when my period would start.

A couple weeks later I had 9 days of bleeding and EPU wouldn't see me until 6 weeks by their calculations. There was a sac and yolk sac (same as a private scan 2 days prior). I convinced myself since I ovulate early that it would be a blighted ovum.

Fast forward to yesterday (7 weeks 1 day by medical calculations, but more 7.4 based on ovulation) I had a private scan which seen a small fetal pole and a white flicker. This was measuring 5 weeks 4days, so 2 weeks behind. 5 weeks and 4 days ago would be ovulation, so I should be measuring 7 weeks 4 days really.

I now have another weeks wait until my next scan in hosp but can't find any way that this can be positive as I'm sure of my dates and even if you look at when I tested positive then 5 weeks 4 days isn't possible.

I'm so confused and it's been turmoil being in limbo for 3 weeks already. I am ill with it!

Any similar stories here?

@KBAJCE24 keeping everything crossed for you.
it’s a long week. I too have shorter cycles 25ish days I had a scan today 6 weeks since lmp and they couldn’t find a yolk sac. I go back next week

KBAJCE24 · 09/12/2024 12:54

Hello!

I hope this is how you do a reply 😅. My friend is currently 12 weeks pregnant and had no yolk sac at her 6 week scan! Hers has went well so hopefully it is the same for you 😁.

I think mine is too far out given my dates 🤦‍♂️ and from what I've read. Honestly it is total mental torture 😬

OP posts:
Bibiddi · 11/12/2024 00:16

@KBAJCE24 wow that’s surprising for your friend - everything I read was very doom and gloom.

how are you feeling are you still having symptoms?
the fact there was progress between the two scans is positive. Hopefully that continues and you have one weeks growth

KBAJCE24 · 12/12/2024 21:04

Hello! Sorry, i have no clue how to tell when someone has responded 😂.

The only symptoms i had were nightsweats and headaches and they all left early. I did have really bad cramp but that has since left. Anything I read about dating that far behind never ends well, maybe grows a bit and ends in a loss. It seems for people it can end well if they've ovulated later, but if you know exactly and it seems wee then its not so good.

Yes she has been totally fine and the hosp were never worried either. Hers must have just popped out late and grew rapid 😂. I feel so bad because my brain won't let me think that I'm pregnant. Must be my heads way if preparing for the worst. Hope your scan goes well next week - the waiting in limbo is honestly horrible!

OP posts:
Bibiddi · 15/12/2024 21:32

@KBAJCE24 dont feel bad for how you’re feeling there is so much going on - it’s normal.
when do you go back for another scan?

KBAJCE24 · 16/12/2024 13:47

Hello!

I was in this morning. The baby is still measuring 5.5-6 weeks, so 2.5 - 3 weeks behind with a slow heart rate. The sonographer says I need to go back in a week but she was quite clear that she would have expected to see more development by now and it isn't looking good so I know it's over and it is just more waiting. It is really horrible this whole process. I lost one of my twins last pregnancy and turning up to the baby being gone was bad enough, but the near 5 weeks in limbo and just waiting for it to happen is hellish. I thought I'd update because I hated nothing more than finding stories like mine and not learning how it all palmed out xx

Gertrudesinthegutter · 16/12/2024 13:58

I’m so sorry to hear of your update 😞

Be gentle with yourself and take it one day at a time 💐

Bibiddi · 17/12/2024 10:05

@KBAJCE24 I’m so sorry to hear that.
the waiting and lack of closer is torture. Have you spoken to your dr?

i had my 7 week scan today still an empty sack. I’m feeling extra anxious with the lead into Christmas as I have had two complicated miscarriages in the past and I’m worried with the holidays it will be harder to be seen

I've tried pressing this quote mark to see if it replies to you 😂. My Dr is on AL, all I did was leave a note with reception to extend my sick line. I have stopped my progesterone now to see if things will kick in so I don't need to wait longer, which feels so bad because it has a wee heartbeat, but by the dates and what was said there isn't hope so I made that choice in hope that I won't be in pain over Christmas. The wait is definitely torture. I literally feel like I'm tuned to the moon now.

That's so frustrating for you too, it is so much more of an anxious time after loss and it really isn't fair how hard it is for some people. Did they not book you back in today? I end up spending ridiculous amounts I don't have on private scans. I must have had one a fortnight last pregnancy. Same with tests, I think I genuinely spent about £200 with the amount of tests I did. I hope you've ovulated a bit later and things are on their way next time! Usually it's a fortnight they leave to see development xx

@KBAJCE24 I spoke to my ob today he’s doing a repeat blood test to track my levels.

He goes away on Saturday and said he could potentially do a d and c on Friday.

It makes me feel nervous like I’m rushing it but at the same time I don’t want to end up in emergency on Christmas

KT199 · 19/12/2024 09:49

Hey! Just wanted to pop a message to say thinking of you and you are definitely not alone 🫶🏻

In a similar situation.. I ovulated CD19 confirm via an ultrasound on CD20 and got a positive test on CD30 4th December (11 DPO). I had a very small amount of brown spotting when wiping on 11th Dec (7 days after first positive test) and some one sided pain so I contacted GP who referred me to EPU for a scan to confirm location. Based on my dates I was 5+1 (LMP had me at 5+6) and they could only see a very small gestation sac of 5mm (which they said was tracking 5/6 days behind 5+1) and potentially a very tiny yolk sac but couldn’t say for sure. With having ovulation confirmed and the positive test I was sure my dates were correct, but agree a day or two out maybe based on implantation but certainly not 5/6. I have a re-scan on Christmas Eve and really aren’t feeling positive, I have no idea how I can get up Xmas morning and go for dinner with the family acting all fine and happy if I get bad news 😥 I’ve also noticed my symptoms don’t really seem to be there too, I have slightly sore boobs and bits of bloating here and there but nothing else.

It's such a hard decision to make when you still have that uncertainty. I take it they'd have another look before they did anything? I'm sorry you're dealing with this too/ again. There is honestly no words and the timing is horrible.

I was wondering if they'd offer me a d&c because I've read horrible stories about the tablets, but I honestly just want it over with now and with the d&c I doubt they'd have me booked in Christmas eve and I don't want to wait until after Christmas. I've cancelled all plans with the prediction that I'll have the tablets and be unable to go anywhere. Although, if they know its not viable but the heart beat is still there on Monday/ there's been even a slight development then I'm not sure if they will have to keep waiting still. It's a total nightmare. I bought a blanket today to wrap and put under my tree in hope that there's a wee person wrapped in it next year xo

Hello! Would the 5/6 days behind from LMP not then match your ovulation dates at 5+1? If so then you're spot on! I had read that 5-6 days either way is OK because of implantation differences etc. I hope that you see some more development when you're next in! Fingers crossed for some happy news for you on cmas eve! The wait is honestly soul destroying! Wait and see what happens, and see if you don't feel up to it, don't go or don't go for long. People need to understand how difficult the limbo is- it's not for the faint hearted xx

hey, first of all I’m sorry and I just wanted to let you know the same thing happened to me with my first pregnancy. I was sure of my dates, but baby measured behind on an early scan despite having a heartbeat and I miscarried at 9 weeks.

Since then I’ve taken 150mg aspirin every day from ovulation (or just when TTC) and this resulted in my son being conceived straight away and our second baby (due next week!) also being conceived straight away.

I always suspected that the reason for my mc was blood flow not getting enough nutrients to the baby, hence the slow growth. Aspirin seems to have changed the game totally for me, I haven’t looked back.

good luck X

Hey, they said I was measuring 4.5 weeks (ish) but none committal due to small size and LMP was meant to be 5+6 (which I knew was wrong) the dates I had from calculating were 5+1 so they suggested 4/5 days behind the 5+1 - sorry if that was confusing!!

Hello!

Can you take it daily? Like every day? I have PCOS so ovulation tests etc don't work for me and often I don't ovulate. But it is very interesting because I have Raynuds (not sure of spelling haha) untreated and I know that is usually treated with asprin and affects blood flow. I was put on asprin last pregnancy but I'd fallen pregnant earlier in the year so it wasn't as cold at the start. I have horses so I'm always out in the freezing cold and the blood flow has been an issue this year, I wonder if there is a correlation!

Awwwww I see! There's definitely still hope, especially with the size, it is so small. But you'll still be so worried understandably. Honestly, the sooner someone invents a way to check on your baby from day 1, the better! I really hope it all goes in your favour! Someone is needing some good news xxx

@KBAJCE24 i also have PCOS! Do you take anything for it? I’m on metformin (from the GP) and myo inositol (that I buy online, it’s basically a vitamin) which helped me to actually ovulate. Ovulation sticks never worked for me but I could tell I started ovulating every month after taking the myo inositol in particular after a few months just because of the consistency of my discharge at that point in the month. It also made my periods super regular, 30 days exactly.

yes you take the aspirin every day, 150mg. I just buy it over the counter. I told my midwife at my first appointment in both pregnancies and they didn’t bat an eyelid. I really feel that it works, the difference has been unbelievable for me.

Good luck xx

@KT199 just wanted to say that if you do get bad news on Christmas eve then I have been there. I had a scan that showed my little one had died on 20th December and then a d and c on 23rd. My older dc were 5, 3 and 11 months at the time. It was horrible and I thought Christmas was ruined for sure. But it wasn't as bad as I thought. I had the operation in the afternoon and by the evening I was physically not too bad. Tired and a bit sore but not as bad as a period. The dc didn't notice anything wrong. Dh did the dinner and I laid the table. We had done an additional place card to be put with mine that said +baby which I have in the baby's memory box. It wasn't a great Christmas for me but it was ok, and better than I thought. Really hope it's good news for you at the scan but if not, try not to worry.

Hello!

I find the GP rubbish for it. All I get told to do is to lose weight which I really struggle with. I lost 4 stone before my last pregnancy, but I had had a literal mental breakdown and wasn't really eating at all/ having bulimic episodes and that's the only way I had managed it.

I uses to take inofolic Alpha which brought back my period. It was about 45 pounds a month. I seen pre conception tablets containing myoistol that I was going to get because I know that is good for PCOS. But ye the doctor won't give me any help unless I lose a lot of weight again. I gained a lot in pregnancy because I was told not to exercise because all the issues and I totally stress ate because of the baby I couldn't stress starve! It is a big mess 🤣 xx

OP posts:
Peonyyyy · 20/12/2024 07:14

I am relatively slim and think that’s just natural for me, i struggle with my moods and definitely emotionally eat which is not good especially when pregnant and with another child, I stress eat too. I’ve gained a lot of weight in this pregnancy and know it’ll be hard to lose it!

I find GPS pretty useless and have given up on them tbh, whenever I need something I’ve had to go private and then they write to my GP for me to get thd prescription on the NHS.

when I came off the pill I didn’t have periods for a year, GP did nothing but I went to a private endocrinologist who put me on metformin which worked. A lot of people are now saying though that just myo inositol is just as helpful. I get mine as a powder from Zita West.

but I’d say aspirin has been the biggest game changer for me x

Thank you for sharing your story and sorry you went through all of that, it’s so hard isn’t it. I am glad you managed to get through Xmas okay !

My situation is a little different in that this is my first pregnancy and Xmas is due to be spent with all my family, mum, dad, grandma, grandad, siblings, nephew/nieces ect so it just feels a lot as no one knows and I don’t get how I can find a brave face to deal with this if we get the news Xmas Eve 😟 but I guess I will have to manage some how.

I find that if I am feeling upset but don't want people to know then I say I have a cold and that's why I have red eyes, look tired and miserable, it always works.

Good idea, thank you. Can just say I’ve not been well and aren’t sleeping cause of it!!

The build up to Xmas got to me so I’ve ended up booking a private scan for the weekend where it will have been almost a week between the previous scan and a few days before Tuesday to see where we are at, it least if there is no/minimal change I can begin to process prior to Xmas Eve. I think that will help my headspace massively.
