Hi I’m looking for some advice, i found out i was pregnant a few days ago and booked an early scan for yesterday The scan came back inconclusive as I’m really early, 5w6d when scanned. There was a yolk sac but no fetal pole and I’ve been told it’s 50/50 chance. Ive been told to wait two weeks and have another scan, I have long irregular cycles but generally are around 34/35 days. And possible conception dates are 03/11 and 09/11 I’m confused if those could add up to being 6 weeks today as I know it’s meant to go from day of last period which was 11/10/24 which would make me 8 weeks? The only way i can make any sense is if I conceived on the 9th and then add two weeks from date of normal period which makes the exact date. Has anyone experienced a scan at this point and no fetal pole or heartbeat and could my dates possibly add up xx

First of all that's totally normal not to see much at this stage. Early scans are only really to make sure the pregnancy is progressing in the correct location. Between 6 and 7 weeks you would normally see development of the embryo and a heartbeat.

Secondly, LMP is an early guide only. It's based on an average cycle of 28 days with ovulation on exactly day 14 so it's not accurate for a lot of women, don't get too hung up on that.

Thirdly, scans this early can be quite a bit out with their dates as we're talking fractions of millimetres. They shouldn't even do scans this early except for medical reasons imo as they can't tell you much and just cause more anxiety.
The most accurate time for dating is your 12 week scan, that's when you'll get an official due date.

This is why scans before 8 weeks should only be conducted in the event of concern relating to pregnancy location/other concerning symptoms. It is too early for a scan to tell you anything at this stage as dates can be a bit out, size is so small inaccuracy is inevitable and presence of a heartbeat can mean something or nothing in terms of viability. Try not to worry at this point, and resist having any more scans until you're at least 8 weeks. Just take things day by day.

Hey, I’ve just been through the exact same thing earlier this week. I went through similar with my son a few years ago and went back after 2 weeks and he was there with a heart beat. I’m going to book another scan in a couple of weeks to double check. It is really worrying but 5 weeks is really early. They only saw the yolk sac and gestational sac on mine. Fingers crossed for us both xx
