Help - LMP and scan don’t match and no heartbeat

Hi there.

im hoping someone might be able to give me some more advice - rather than the non committal sonographer I saw!

according to my LMP I’m 7weeks plus 4 days pregnant. My periods have been regular - every 29 days for about 10 years and never had any issues.

I went for an early viability scan to help with my anxiety - but they couldn’t see a heart beat and the measurements of the ‘baby tissue’ was about 5 weeks yet the sac size measured to me my last period dates at 7 weeks.

Theyve said I need to wait another week for another scan but I’m beside myself with anxiety. I’m mentally preparing myself to expect a bleed - or for there to be no heartbeat next week at my 8 week scan.

Is this normal? Has it happened to anyone else? The sonographer said it was too early but I know you should be able to see a heart beat at 7 and a half weeks.

Any advice or insight would be much appreciated even if I should be preparing myself for the worst.

Thanks all in advance xxx

Hi OP, so sorry you are going through this. I think the sonographers have to keep it very factual and don't want to commit at this stage as the only thing that can really give you any definitive answer is time.

Normally I'd be saying that LMP isn't particularly accurate (my baby is 10 days behind my LMP date and I'm now 24 weeks) and that it's not uncommon to measure differently, especially at this early stage. You could have had a longer cycle this month and ovulated late for example if you aren't 100% sure when you ovulated.....

However, I really don't want to give you false hope. The fact the gestational sac measured so much bigger than the baby tissue and there was no heartbeat is not a good sign. If it was just late ovulation then the gestational sac should be smaller too.

I'm so sorry but I think you need to mentally start preparing yourself for bad news.

I'm in this situation unfortunately my scan two weeks later didn't show much growth. Right up to the moment of the second scan professionals had all been optimistic. I have to go back in a week to have it confirmed they are now saying it's highly likely to be another miscarriage. A single scan on its own that's behind isn't necessarily a problem if it continues to grow at that pace. The waiting is awful though!

Thanks guys for your advice.

In a panic I went for another scan this afternoon - I estimate I’m now 7 weeks 6 days but they were measuring me still at 6 weeks 1 day. With no heartbeat still. She said I need to be patient and wait but god it’s so hard. She said that everything looks good just too small to see anything clearly. But I just don’t understand why there is such a vast discrepancy between my LMP and the size it’s measuring.

Another anxious week ahead. But thank you!

If you ovulated later than usual you might be ok, as at 5 weeks there wouldn't be a heartbeat x
