Any tips for heartburn?

I'm 23+3, second baby and have been really suffering for the last couple of weeks.... it's constant!
Feels like i'm popping rennies like they're skittles at the moment and they're not even touching it.

Speak to the GP about getting medication prescribed. Omeprazole or ranitidine if I remember correctly. Some GPs seem to feel you should suffer, so make sure you emphasise how awful it is making you feel! Davison did nothing for me, but the omeprazole stopped my heartburn completely and made my pregnancy slightly bearable!!

Before going down the prescription route, try Gaviscon liquid. Rennies didn't make any difference for me, but Gavi 🩷

I second this, especially the Gaviscon Advance is what I've found to be brilliant.
Rennies just don't hardly help but Gaviscon sorts it right out.

Thank you!

I'm going to try the gaviscon route first then will go to GP as a last resort if I need to.

Those who have taken omeprazole for a while in pregnancy, did you find you got rebound hyperacidity when you stopped it?

I took it for a short while at the end of my last pregnancy but this time I'm already suffering badly at 16 weeks. Omeprazole helps but I'm worried about it being worse when I stop it so I'm trying to avoid it. Gaviscon is problematic because I'm still nauseous and vomiting and it's vile to vomit it back up!

thingsineverthoughtidsay · 03/12/2024 08:44

@tb4122 I didn’t at all. I took it right up until my babies were born, and then stopped, and I never had any further symptoms after that. I might have been a lucky one, but it only did good for me, and stopped not just my heartburn completely, but my nausea as well.

FeedMeBrunch · 03/12/2024 08:47

I took Omeprazole (bought over the counter, didn’t need to see GP) it instantly solved the problem

No problems when I stopped taking it

Gaviscon all the way. I was swigging it out the bottle by the end of both pregnancies 😂

vibratosprigato · 03/12/2024 09:19

Out of interest did your babies have lots of hair?

I had acid reflux in my last pregnancy (though plenty of rennies made it tolerable for me!) and people kept telling me my DD would be born with lots of hair and she really was! Wondering if there is any truth to it or if it was just a coincidence.

Currently doing the same!!😅 No need to measure out, just take it straight from the bottle🤭

I don't recall having heartburn at all in my first pregnancy and DD1 had a mass of hair and still does now aged 4.

Time will tell with DD2

@sel2223 I'm 16.5 weeks with this pregnancy and haven't really suffered with it yet, wondering if I should expect a bald baby this time 😂

Well certainly not if my first born is anything to go by! Very full head of hair but no heartburn whatsoever.

In this pregnancy I was over 20 weeks before it hit me with a bang though so there's time for you yet, sorry!

Omeprazole 100%. I had it with both my girls from about 20 weeks. You won't need gaviscon at all.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 03/12/2024 11:33

Try eating little and often. Mine would be worse at any hint of an empty stomach.

OnePinkSloth · 03/12/2024 12:19

Mine is always worse after consuming anything with white flour in it.

sel2223 · 03/12/2024 12:21

I think I might start keeping a little food diary to see if there's anything particular that triggers it

I haven't noticed any pattern up till now but it's definitely worse if I eat or drink. Even a sip of water can set it off and it's becoming an all day every day thing.

Will be getting some gaviscon on my way home tonight to try for a few days before resorting to the GP
