An unassuming young woman, newly pregnant, was remanded in custody after protest arrest and not guilty plea. She was put straight into isolation. Why?

Pretty impossible for anyone on here to tell you that I would think, particularly given how little context there is.

Wigglywoowho · 29/11/2024 10:49

Maybe what she was protesting about could cause her an issue. Maybe they are worried about her safety or the safety of the baby.

Mrsttcno1 · 29/11/2024 11:18

My instinct would say that it’s for safety of both her & baby, presumably until they can find somewhere suitable it is safer for her to be away from general population

mollyfolk · 29/11/2024 21:59

I would think for her own safety and hopefully a bit comfort. Not to be worried about cell mates.

Update: The prison won't comment on the issue, but there is a prison grapevine which are postings of inmates. They said she was hauled off to seg because she didn't declare her pregnancy on the medical form. The doctor found out she was pregnant from a urine test. Seg was her punishment. Wonderful people these prison doctors.

How do you know it was punishment and not safety?
What if anything did the prison dr do wrong ?

And you are taking the prison Grapevine as gospel are you?! What is your interest in this young woman? – are you family?

If I was in this situation I would be delighted to be on my own and not with the other prisoners. For a variety of reasons.

LilacSwan · 01/12/2024 09:01

We monitor the outcomes of women arrested during street protests. Bronzefield prison is notorious for its violence and how it handles pregnant women, and for poor healthcare. There have been deaths and unnecessary segregation. Still doing strip searches, although banned. See Prison Inspector's report, which omits many red flags. Questionaires given to every prisoner for their comments were not returned.l
