Having a scan at the EPU today, due to previous miscarriages. I have had tons on early scans in the past but never this early! Can anyone tell me what I can expect to see, if anything? I understand it's likely I won't see a heartbeat.

They wanted to scan me next week but I'm on holiday. From what I understand they will scan me again in a couple of weeks anyway.

Hi OP, scans done this early are mostly to rule out ectopic pregnancies and confirm the pregnancy is developing in the right place so make sure you go with realistic expectations.

At under 5 weeks there is usually nothing more to see than the thickening of the lining of the uterus. By 5 weeks you should start to see the gestational sac. By 6 weeks you would hopefully see the yolk sac and fetal pole.
It is between 6 and 7 weeks when a tiny embryo can normally be seen with the flutter of a little heartbeat.

If only going by LMP and not physically tracking ovulation, bear in mind this is not accurate for a lot of women so you could be ahead or behind where you think you are which will of course affect what can be seen today. If your dates are right and you are 5+2, the liklihood is you will only see an empty gestational sac today and you'll be invited back in a couple of weeks to check it is growing and progressing as it should.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks @sel2223. I've previously had a pregnancy of unknown location, so I understand they are mainly checking the pregnancy is in the correct place.

Will keep you updated 🙂

In m surprised EPU have agreed to scan you this early? Even with my history of ruptured ectopics the minimum was 6 weeks and that was it nonnegotiable with them! At this point in a normally progressing pregnancy you'd likely see the sac and perhaps yolk sac. Too early for a heart beat etc, good luck! X
