Has anyone else fallen pregnant after taking the morning after pill?

Hello

I’m pregnant after taking the morning after pill which I know delays ovulation but hasn’t worked. I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? I bought it from the pharmacy but didn’t know that the copper iud/emergency coil was a different option that worked in a different way? Was this the case for you if you have been or are in the same situation?

Thank you! X

Yea as it has no effect if you've ovulated already - I didn't know this until it failed!

Yes. I took the MAP no more than 36 hours after dtd, and it's supposed to work up to 72hours after. But I fell pregnant. Didn't believe it at first as just assumed the MAP had cocked up my cycle. (I was never very regular in the first place). I was really annoyed that there was no where/ way to report being pregnant despite taking it. I feel as though they should have to record it so they can update their stats.
I had an abortion as soon as I could after finding out I was pregnant. (Taking the tablets)

It find it really frustrating that if you take it after ovulating it won't work and you need an option that prevents implantation isn't brought up at the point of sale. You could ovulate on the day of intercourse right up to the point of taking it (within the 72h window) and it won't do what you want. It's at the point in a woman's cycle that she's most vulnerable and I feel for every woman that finds herself in this situation.

I don't know if this would fall under the scheme but there is the yellow card system for reporting medication side effects. Pregnancy is quite a significant side effects of an emergency contraception so I think it could be the correct place.

This happened to me but many years ago. Have you decided what to do about the pregnancy? I'm assuming the pregnancy wasnt planned if you took the MAP - hope you are ok 💐

RosieLeaf · 23/11/2024 20:50

Yes, kind of knew it was probably too late but wanted to try just in case.

Was pregnant on a test two weeks later

Notmefornow1 · 23/11/2024 22:23

Oh yikes I had no idea this was a thing! I took it probably 4 times around 20 years ago when I was young and foolish. I thought it just.. I don't even know.. emptied out everything in your uterus and returned you to some sort of ground zero.

PermanentTemporary · 23/11/2024 22:28

Yup. I've taken it 3 times in my life and the last one was 21 years ago... ds was born 9 months later. Tbh in my case I'm actually glad it failed as it was probably my only chance.

Smileybutwily · 23/11/2024 22:40

Which one were you offered? There are 2 different types and one is significantly more effective than the other.

Boymumma1 · 23/11/2024 22:47

This happened to me a few years ago, was such a difficult time and had to make some big decisions. Hope you’re ok 🫶🏻

EllieRosesMammy · 23/11/2024 23:01

If you've already ovulated the MAP does not work - which sounds like what has happened to you and also happened to me and lots of other women I know 😅

Hope everything works out well for you! X

CrotchetyQuaver · 23/11/2024 23:05

I had an ectopic pregnancy after taking the MAP. Over 30 years ago now. So it sort of worked but not the way it's supposed to. I do think the two events are linked.

Bobbybobbins · 24/11/2024 00:07

Yep I did over 20 years ago in my early 20s. I ended up having an abortion. I had no idea that there were factors that would mean it wouldn't work until reading this post!

HappyGoLucky31 · 24/11/2024 07:41

Me currently 🙈 just pure ignorance and naivety really. DTD around ovulation without realising, not keeping track.

Have been using the withdrawal ‘method’ since having my son in 2020 and took the MAP around 30 hours after having sex.

After the shock, it was welcome news. :)

Fridaysgirl17 · 24/11/2024 07:50

Yes it happened to me , I took the MAP 24 hours after DTD,it was actually due to contraception failure, split condom, he's 4 now, I'm in Ireland so choices are a bit more limited here so I continued with my pregnancy which I'm glad for now but it was a confusing time as I already had a toddler & my now ex worked away a good bit

Thanks all🙂was you told about the emergency coil as an alternative option if you get the pill from the chemist? X

Why are you asking this by private message too? Is this a nudge for the coil?

Caesious · 24/11/2024 08:13

Me, took it within 12 hours of failed contraception, thought nothing more of it until I missed a period.
That little accident is now 8 and the light of my life, I’m so grateful that the MAP didn’t work!
Hope everything works out for you whatever you decide to do.

Not at all. I guess I’m just feeling a little bit silly and wanted to know if I was the only one who didn’t really know about it, that is all🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes me too about 12 years ago. We used withdrawal method that time and I realised after that it was my ovulation time so higher risk of pregnancy so I took MAP. Had no idea that it didn't work once ovulated until much later. Fell pregnant.

66babe · 24/11/2024 08:23

Remember to discuss BMI with MAP prescriber ,it may be necessary to have 2 if over 70 kg .. dependant on which method you are having .. as a larger frame reduces effectiveness
Same goes for certain routine pill
