5 weeks pregnant and cramping/bleeding

Hi everyone. I’m 5 weeks and 3 days pregnant, and this evening I started cramping like period pains and when I’ve gone to the bathroom there is pink blood on the toilet paper. Has this happened to anyone else and it’s been okay?

I know it’s common but we’ve been doing IVF for almost two years now and this is our first positive cycle so we’re really stressed about it. We even went to the out of hours doctor who said there was nothing they could do, so no reassurance there.

I tested earlier today and it was dark and positive, but I really feel like I’m getting my period. It’s the same cramps, the same pink blood I get before my actual period comes, and my boobs have just started hurting the way they do before my period and they haven’t hurt before that.

Would love some reassuring stories!

I’ve had this with all my pregnancies, including one natural and two IVF. Some even involved clots. In my case, they all worked out. I’ve had several miscarriages but they were all missed miscarriages and none resulted in any bleeding.

Bleeding and cramping can be completely normal. I hope it works out for you. Is your clinic monitoring your HCG levels? That’ll help tell you what’s going on.

Cramping and some light bleeding or spotting are really common in early pregnancy, as is the feeling you're going to come on your period! It could be nothing, it could be something, unfortunately there is just no way of knowing. Try to take one day at a time. 'Today I'm pregnant'. There isn't anything anyone medical can do to change the outcome, or anything you can do unfortunately, it's just a waiting game. Wishing you well.

It obviously can be a sign of miscarriage and something being wrong with the pregnancy however I bled the whole way through my second pregnancy, sometimes quite heavily, and I now have a 10 month old. It was tough as I expected the worst each time.

I really hope all goes well with you and your baby Flowers

@SeeImSmiling I'm 5 weeks 5 days and keep getting that period pain feeling too and the associated period symptoms like dodgy tummy. I've also had an MC around this time and didn't get period pain then, just one hour of horrendously painful cramps immediately before the whole thing came away. That was definitely worse than period pain so I'm trying to focus on the fact it feels different to my MC. Hope things work out for you, we've also been on this fertility journey a long time x
