7 weeks but measuring 5 weeks 4 days

Hi everyone,

I really need some advice. I went to have an early scan today. My LMP was 7 weeks ago. But the ultrasound scan showed it was measuring at 5 weeks 4 days and could only see the sac. I rang the hospital and the doctor said it is quite common and I could’ve gotten my dates wrong. I’m going in for another scan in 10 days time.

Has anyone ever had this? I’ve had really strong positive tests and the weeks have continued to climb on clear blue weeks indicators.

Wsandy · 14/11/2024 16:23

Hey yeah I had been tracking ovulation and got my first positive test on the 23rd of October , the day before my period was due. I’m not sure what to think but doctor said not to loose hope

Definitely don’t overthink it too much it is very common for your weeks to be behind your lmp

If you ovulated on the 23rd of October you would roughly be between the 5-6 week mark now I believe but I’m not 100% sure 🤞🏼 fingers crossed for you 🩷

FinallyMovingHouse · 14/11/2024 17:22

If it makes you feel any better, I conceived DC1 on day 14, DC2 on day 8 and DC3 on day 23. I know this, as I was avoiding sex in some of the weeks due to raging thrush!

No I think I ovulated around the 11th or 12th , got a positive pregnancy test on the 23rd .. day before period was due . I’m not feeling too hopeful but thank you x

This happens all the time.
Your baby is tiny at this stage. It's hard to get an accurate measurement.

Why did they scan you? Have you had previous losses?

I just wanted reassurance as I had a lot of anxiety. It’s my first pregnancy. I booked a private one but I don’t feel like a lot of time was spent. Just was told the sac was measuring at 5 weeks 4 days but LMP was 7 weeks ago x

Oh sorry I thought you meant you got your first positive ovulation test on the 23 of October but dont give up hope 🩷 maybe because baby is so small at this stage it’s harder to get an accurate measurement?

Okay, I understand.

But these very early "reassurance" scans often do the opposite.

Please don't worry. The NHS will scan you at 12 weeks. That's when you'll get your due date.

Remember that implantation isn't an exact science.

In all honesty it could go either way. If you definitely know your dates then it isn't a great sign as they should be able to see more at 7 weeks. But until you've been rescanned in at least 2 weeks unfortunately there's no way to know.
I had a scan at my IVF clinic at what would have been 7 weeks. They could only see a sac. They were honest with me that it was very unlikely to come to anything as you should see more at this point. I was rescanned 2 weeks later at my local EPU and confirmed missed miscarriage.
But, because that was an IVF pregnancy there was no leeway on dates. With ovulation, even if you track, there's always a possibility the dates are off. Also, it's dependent on how good the person who scanned you is and the position of your uterus etc. There's been many stories online where people have been rescanned and everything has caught up and is normal.
So while I do think you should just be aware that it might not be good news, there's still a fair chance it will be fine.

Stef92 · 14/11/2024 21:28

I was told at my EPU scan last week that they can be a week out either way when it's that early to bear that in mind too

Piquantkoala · 14/11/2024 21:40

I went for an early scan when I thought I was 8 weeks, she said I was very off with my dates and more likely 6/7 weeks. NHS 12 week scan only showed me 5 days behind what I had expected. I agree with what others have said, these early reassurance scans are not always so reassuring! Hope all is well in 10 days time.

If you’re 5 weeks 4 days, then that would mean you would have been able to get a first positive test around 1 week 4 days ago. Well a couple of days or so before.

But you got one almost 3 weeks ago. So they are saying you would have been 2 weeks 4 days then on that day? Which would be impossible to get a positive test then. That’s only 4 days after ovulation.

PrettyPepper · 14/11/2024 21:59

I have to be honest I felt I wasn’t really happy with how the whole scan went. I was in and out in a total of 16 minutes from start to finish. No exaggeration. From the time I checked in to the time I was rebooked in 10 days time and walking back to my car. I felt the person who scanned me didn’t really look properly? The doctor in the hospital said she doesn’t like these private early scans for this reason. My mum said something isn’t sitting right with her about the whole thing. I’m not sure. I can only wait and see what happens at next scan. Thanks for your responses everyone xx

Honestly, don't waste your money.
The NHS will scan you at 12 weeks.

Private scan places are robbers.

anonny55 · 14/11/2024 22:06

Also made the mistake of having a private scan 6 weeks from LMP. I had a pregnancy of unknown location, scan was rushed and no compassion whatsoever from the place. Just told to go home and I'll miscarry. A few weeks later I had an epu scan and there was a sac and yolk sac but no baby..5 days later heartbeat was present. I'm not 25 weeks. I had absolutely no hope at all and was convinced id miscarry. Pregnancy's been perfect so far

TheBirdintheCave · 14/11/2024 22:46

Both times this happened to me when I was 100% sure of my dates it was bad news :( The two pregnancies which were bang on or ahead of my dates at scans resulted in my children.

I really hope it was just scanning ineptitude from the clinic and it all turns out well for you OP!

fashionqueen0123 · 15/11/2024 09:10

Tbh this happened to a friend of mine at an nhs scan too. Telling her she wouldn’t have been pregnant when she got a positive test by having the dates so different. She ended up miscarrying. They just don’t believe women’s dates.

Katiesaidthat · 15/11/2024 09:27

I had a scan at my IVF clinic at 5 weeks due to unexplained bleeding, they could just see a sack. The consultant did say to me that he felt positive because the sack was very even and round (and although this definitely isn´t maths) that the fact that is wasn´t irregular pointed more to a good result than not. At 8 weeks they repeated the scan and there was a tiny L shaped figure, which grew into my daughter. They didn´t repeat before as they didn´t want another image of just the sack. At 8 weeks the embryo is the size of a small olive. I wish you all the best, i hope all will sort itself out.

Any update OP?
