Hi,
I started very light spotting on Monday. Called the EPAU, they booked me in Tuesday for an internal scan.
I paid and had a private scan due to anxiety and fear I was going through a miscarriage.
At the private scan she measured my gestational sac measuring 6weeks and 4 days (which is right if following my estimated conception date), but couldn’t locate a yolk sac or fetal pole. But 3 weeks too small if following my last period. (I have PCOS and my cycle is 35 days not the typical 28)
so walked away upset and even more anxious.
went for the NHS scan at epau on Tuesday. Had internal scan, who again found my gestational sac measuring 6weeks 5days. But again couldn’t find the yolk or fetal pole.
I have to go back in 10 days (now 9) to be rescanned. But the nurse said there is only a 10% chance they will locate something other than a fluid filled sac which is measuring correctly!
is this common? Could it be a case of it’s too early to detect?

im frightened that this will result in a miscarriage. My head is spinning and doing endless amounts of research.

Note that the spotting was only present when I wiped when using the loo and lasted less than 24 hours.

Couldn't read and run -- just wanted to say I know how terrifying it is when you spot at this stage. With an irregular period your dates could definitely be out. I had similar anxiety of having to wait for second scan before they could say anything, when there was a gestational and yolk sac but no fetal pole at about that stage. The doctor said to me that it could go either way so keep positive!

@girljulian its very frustrating because the difference between my last period and ovulation is 21 days. According to my last period I am 10w1day but following from ovulation / conception I’m 6w5d..
im not so concerned about the light spotting as I know that can be normal in some pregnancies. I’m concerned that when I had my internal scan at 6w4d they could only see a sac. No yolk or fetal pole.

the hospital are going off my period dates and completely ignoring my conception dates and are going along the lines of I should be more progressed in the pregnancy by now but in my mind I’m certain it could be too early to detect

I hope it's just too early to detect. At 6 weeks 4 days you would usually expect a yolk sac but I had no fetal pole then.

So sorry you're going through this, I think the EPU have to try and give it to you straight and not feed false hope but 10% chance is still 10% chance.
All you can do now is wait and try to stay positive as best you can.
Good luck to you

What a difficult situation to be in. I'm so sorry you're going through this and experiencing this stress and anxiety. It's so cruel. PCOS can definitely make everything more difficult in terms of dates. In my experience the hospital have to go off your LMP as a starting point and can adjust your dates as time goes on.
I say this with gentleness, but at 6+4 you would see a yolk sac and fetal pole on an internal scan. Unless perhaps you are even earlier than 6+4 that might explain it. Mind yourself in the days ahead, the wait for the follow up scan is so tough. I hope you have good support around you that you can lean on.

Just got off the phone to EPAU nurse.
She said when I return for the scan on 22nd and there has been no development I will not be forced into taking anything to force a miscarriage.
I would be offered to have another scan in another 10 days if I wanted to. It’s patient lead.

The scan I had on Tuesday is measuring my conception date. And there are no signs within my scan I am bleeding or there are complications. Just that my dates are further behind than my period. I explained that my period was 21 days before my conception. And she said that unltimatly that gives 21 days to catch up. She said these situations do arise frequently and mainly because the dates are wrong. She is saying that right at this moment in time although I am really anxious and so I should be, but not to worry as it’s likely it hasn’t had time to develop. Which is positive news.. but I’m still preparing myself for the worst.

That's all you can do OP - prepare for the worst but hope for the best.

@sel2223 its a horrible feeling… the anticipation.. but feel rest assured im not the last or only woman to go through this situation.
