Migraines during first trimester

I’ve always been a migraine sufferer and during my first pregnancy I hardly suffered any headaches or migraines at all.

This time round, I’ve had a number of milder headaches but in the last three weeks I’ve had two migraines with aura (where I’ve lost my eyesight). I rarely get these when not pregnant (often once yearly). I cannot take my normal medication either so I’m finding them increasingly hard work.

Any advice or suggestions? TIA.

OP, I also have always suffered aura/vision disturbed migraines but have found them worsening and becoming more frequent with pregnancy, must be the hormones. Paracetamol does nothing, what helps for me personally is peppermint oil applied on the temples and back of the neck (you can get the diluted roll-on specifically for this purpose) and also a cold compress over the eyes - ie a bag of frozen peas or something wrapped in a tea towel. Lie down in a dark room and elevate your feet slightly. Hope this helps - migraines are literally the worst

Would highly recommend getting one of these! Just make sure it's the diluted one suitable for application to the skin - pure undiluted peppermint oil can be very stingy otherwise! It provides a lovely cooling sensation

I don’t have any helpful advice only to say this happened to me too. In the past I usually have aura migraines maybe once a year, maybe twice.

In my second pregnancy ( the first was a mmc) I had none, no headaches or migraines or aura migraines. This time I have had 1-2 weeks of headaches around week 5 and then about weeks 7-8 I had 2-3 occasions of aura migraines and I think once at about week 9/10 as well. I haven’t had any since then and I’m now 17 weeks. So I’m hoping it was just the first trimester. My sickness was fairly similar to the last time (well started and stopped 3 weeks earlier but similar intensity) so I don’t know why I had the aura migraines too.

Hopefully yours go too in the second trimester?

Thank you both. I shall take a look at those recommendations. Paracetamol does not touch mine either, I was incredibly drained trying to work through as best I could and then once I was home and relaxing my eyesight went and I had to go to bed. I woke this morning and the pain has now moved to the opposite temple and still trying to persevere through work.
