Applying for UC whilst on maternity leave

Hi guys I was wondering if someone could give me advice.

i will start maternity leave 2nd December I qualify for occupational pay so the first 4 weeks full pay etc ( I am a teacher so under the burgundy book scheme)

I was wondering when would be the best time to apply for universal credit? Should I apply as soon as I start mat leave or once my pay drops ? I will be moving on to SPL from April also

You can apply before you even go on leave, you'll just get a zero award I think? But it takes 6 months of zero awards to be automatically closed down.

Is it checked every month ? To see if there has been any changes.
