Ectopic pregnancy fears

So I'm 6 weeks pregnant. Had an early scan and they diagnosed pregnancy of unknown location. Very thick uterine lining. They see something small in the uterus that could possibly be the gestational sac but they are not sure. No yolk sac or anything. I've been experiencing pain on and off and brown bleeding on and off for a couple of days. Started off as bright red blood. Also passed a couple of small stringy clots. But this started off after pelvic exams and internal ultrasound so maybe this could have triggered something? Went to a&e in panic a couple of times. They sent me away and said my obs and general bloods are good. I'm under the care of the early pregnancy unit. Just had the second 48 hour hcg blood test today. Waiting for them to call me tomorrow with the results. Very nervous. Not sure if it's ectopic of miscarriage or nothing. When I was examined my uterus was closed. So I'm guessing not miscarriage? My first hcg bloods were apparently fitting with a normal pregnancy. But I've read online this can be the case with ectopic. I'm terrified of rupture. Anybody have any kind words or reasurring stories of their own?

Sorry you're going through this uncertain and worry time. When I had ectopic, there was nothing in the womb at all that would signal a pregnancy was there, instead there was a fresh blood supply going to one of my fallopian tubes, I had to have it surgically removed and it was defo an ectopic pregnancy. It's sounds with the thickening and something identified in womb that the pregnancy did occur in the womb. At 6 weeks I'd expect them to be able to see a little more than what you've described, but the only other factor could be that you're earlier than what you think and your dates aren't accurate etc, is this a possibility?

I have no experience of ectopic & no medical knowledge but to me I think the spotting could well be and is very likely from the exam & if they say uterus is closed that sounds like good news. I would have thought that 6 weeks is quite early to see much, isn't it meant to still be tiny like a pea or some such at that point? Which would be difficult to find on the ultrasound right now I would have thought - size plus angles/where its implanted, the shape of your uterus etc. Try not to stress (easier said than done I know, it took me a long time to conceive my second & I worried a LOT in the first few months-rationally I know worrying doesn't help but I couldn't stop myself). Sounds to me that you're likely fine, fingers crossed for you OP for a healthy and smooth pregnancy and birth.

Thank you for your replys. I don't have many people to talk to so it really helps. I got a call to say my hcg levels are increasing in line with a normal pregnancy. They're not too worried about ectopic but still can't rule it out. They want me to have another scan in a day or 2 to see if they can see anything yet. The pain has subsided a bit but I'm still worried about the blood/brown discharge. I've never experienced anything quite like this and something just doesn't feel right. The pelvic exams were a few days ago now so why won't it go away. I meant to say that they saw a area of hemorrhage next to what they thought could be the gestational sac on my first scan. Not sure what this means.

Hey I'm currently going through this. I'm back at the hospital this evening for my third round of bloods to check my hcg level. Can I ask what your levels were each time you had them please? Mine haven't doubled but have increased some but I'm so worried

CrotchetyQuaver · 10/11/2024 08:56

Rupture is obviously not ideal but it's not necessarily the end of the world. I went on to have 2 DC after my ectopic 30 odd years ago resulted in a ruptured tube needing to be removed. So many other women with similar stories. I think they can treat them these days without the need for surgery if they catch them in time?

My levels on Thursday were 3116.8. Saturday 5384.6. So they've increased by around 70 something percent. Which they said is reassuring as ectopic hcg usually rises slower. But not always. So not out of the woods until my next scan in a day or 2.

I had a similar thing recently. Had a scan at my fertility clinic at what should have been 7 weeks. They could only see what she thought was a sac but it was tiny. So she had to send me to the EPU with a possible pregnancy of unknown location. My bloods/HCG and progesterone levels had been perfect the entire time.
They confirmed after 2 scans that it was the sac but sadly nothing else had formed. I miscarried naturally a week later.

Hopefully the fact you are only 6 weeks means there's still time for it to grow and catch up.

So sorry to hear this. How far apart were your scans if you don't mind me asking? So hcg can still rise even with non viable pregnancy? I'm told so many different things and read so many different things online I sometimes don't know what to think.

Yes unfortunately HCG can rise normally with a missed miscarriage. I've had 2 MMC now and both times my HCG doubled perfectly.

With my first one I had a scan at what should have been 6.4 weeks and was measuring 5.4 with heartbeat. HCG levels perfect (even my digital weeks tests progressed perfectly). I knew my dates couldn't be a week out so I had a second scan 2 weeks later at what should have been 8.5 weeks and they could see embryo still measuring 5.5 but no heartbeat this time. I was referred and had one more scan then had surgery to remove at what would have been 10 weeks.

The second recent one my clinic were monitoring my HCG and progesterone and were very happy but sadly at the 7 week scan as I said before it only showed a tiny possible sac. The EPU scanned me the next day then 2 weeks later to confirm no growth. Thankfully I didn't need surgery that time as it happened naturally about 5 days after the second scan when I should have been about 10 weeks.

I had a similar situation with DS2. He had implanted the uterus side of the start of the fallopian tube so he was caused irritation but it wasn't an ectopic pregnancy.

Hoping it's not a problem for you either.

G88 · 10/11/2024 10:31

I'm so sorry for what you've been through. That must have been very difficult. I thought I may have been miscarrying already but the blood is too light, more like brown discharge. And its been stopping and starting. I've had a bit of red blood here and there. And when examined at the hospital they said my womb was closed. So I'm not sure.

I wouldn't worry too much about spotting. While it obviously CAN be a bad sign, for many people it's perfectly normal and they go on to have perfect pregnancies.
It's the waiting that is the worst in these situations i know. Knowing there's nothing you can do about it.
