11w spotting

Hi guys,

A bit of a random one. Weeks 6-8 I had brown spotting on and off which really freaked me out. I had about 3 scans during this period of time to monitor it, and every time baby was absolutely fine. No one actually ever told me what caused the spotting and put it down to cervical irritation.

Anyway, I’m now 11 weeks. Today I woke up with some heavier spotting. I also had cramping last night (only slightly) and throughout today. The spotting started off pink and then turned brown, but there was a lot more than the first few times plus of course I am later on in my pregnancy now.

I was SO upset this morning and booked in another scan. Luckily, scan went perfectly and my dr said again, the bleed is coming from outside the womb around the cervix area. Baby is growing perfectly, moving around and heartbeat is strong, from what she could see no chromosomal abnormalities either.

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this? If so, when did it end? I’m still SO confused at what is triggering it. My partner has been away for a week so we haven’t had sex in a week, so it’s not caused by that. I have had a very chilled out week, not done any crazy exercise etc. I just don’t get what’s causing it! Hoping it stops soon, as the first trimester has felt like nothing but worry and recurrent spotting :(

Yes I did/am, please don’t worry. I didn’t have it at all in my last pregnancy but in this one I have had it on and off throughout. It’s worrying when it happens, but it seems to usually be after I’ve done a lot of walking/chasing after my 3 year old or after sex.

I’ve been in for monitoring a couple times and they examined me, turns out I have cervical ectropian. It’s not harmful for the baby, it’s hormonal and the blood comes from the outside of the cervix. I am 32 weeks.

good luck x

Hi @Hannah2025 in a similar situation, I am 6+6 and think it has been triggered by intercourse/orgasms but I have no idea! It started last night pinkish and is now brown. Feeling super anxious as I had a MC few months ago! Any update?

I am now 25w pregnant and baby is healthy and happy! It turned out my spotting was cervical, outside of the womb, it’s very common. One thing I will mention is at my 20w scan I was told I have a low lying placenta (which can cause spotting and bleeds). I’m not sure if the two correlate but it was interesting to find out! Best of luck with everything xx

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, I’ve been a ball of anxiousness since last night. Ah 25w that is incredible news, congratulations! I’m now super nervous that they will end up doing the internal scan and it’ll make the spotting continue. Do you recall how long yours lasted for each time?

It’s all good lovely, I’m just happy to reassure whenever I can! I know the feeling of being worried RE internal scans. If it helps, I am getting rescanned at 32w due to my low lying placenta and it’s going to be an internal scan. When you have a low lying placenta you are advised against everything from intercourse to finger stimulation due to the risk of bleeds, so when I was told I was having an internal ultrasound I was confused as I thought ‘surely if I can’t put ANYTHING up there then an internal scan could cause spotting/a bleed’. I talked to the midwife last week - the sonographers that do the internal scans are very skilled and they won’t cause damage. It’s always worth airing your stresses and worries to the sonographer as they will be able to advise what’s best. Also, I actually managed to have an over the tummy scan at 6w with a full bladder! The spotting only ever lasted around 24 hours a time when I had it, and I had it around 4/5 times maybe more throughout my first trimester xx

I’ll be sure to ask about low lying placenta when the time comes as I feel so certain I have some sort of sensitive cervix given the spotting I had last time too. Honestly, I feel so so weary now of even that internal scan triggering more spotting which I’m sure it will! Thats reassuring to know, thank you! When it came back for you, would it come back as pink then go to brown or just come as brown each time? xxx
