40 weeks = 10 months?

Why do I keep seeing on social media posts that pregnancy is actually 10 months long because 40 weeks is 10 months?

I get it's not bang on nine months but there's only one month of the year that's 4 weeks exactly. 40 weeks from today is 9 months and 1 week, not 10 months?

I don’t think anyone is trying to do a mathematical proof, aren’t they’re just saying pregnancy feels really long? Both my to-term pregnancies felt like about 3 years.

The one I saw today said something along the lines of 'a month is 4 weeks and 4x10=40 so a pregnancy is 10 months and if you go over its almost 11 months!'. They're usually about the same.

That's so stupid. A month isn't 4 weeks.

Over term pregnancy is often around ten month tho, especially considering pregnancy is counted from 2 weeks before conception.

By this logic there are 13 months in a year.

The first 2 weeks don't count either as the clock starts from the last AF due date so you actually conceive at week 2.

A month isn't 4 weeks though 🤣

RedRobyn2021 · 25/10/2024 13:06

I'm in a group called Ten Month Mamas for women that go "overdue" so 41/42/43 weeks which I guess it more like 10 months

FudgeSundae · 25/10/2024 13:07

But even 42 weeks is really 40 weeks (as pregnancy counts from 2 weeks pre conception) which is absolutely 9 months not 10?!

I completely understand going overdue would be more 10 months and won't deny that, but its when 40 weeks is being classed as ten months.

Because they are idiots who don't know the difference between lunar months and calender months.

CarolNewYear · 25/10/2024 14:04

It's because the pregnancy is backdated to the start of your last period - so by the time you find out you're already a month pregnanct. Then it takes about another 9 months... hope that makes sense x

Velvian · 25/10/2024 14:07

They sound dim. Included in the 40 weeks is 2 weeks (on average) before you were pregnant anyway.
