I had placenta praevia with DS1 and was scanned right up til the last minute. I was nearly booked in for a caesarian but I kept putting it off...... and eventually had totally natural birth with no complications. So they can move - just not sure how common my experience is?

I had a low placenta which didn't move - i was booked for another scan at 34 weeks to check it's postion. I ended up having a section at 37 weeks.
I think more often than not the placenta will move. If it doesn't a natural birth might be possible, depending just how close to your cervix the placenta is. Were you warned that it migth cause bleeding? I had quite a severe bleed at 32 weeks and was taken into hospital to be monitored for 48 hours. Bleeding is a common thing with a low placenta, but equally you may still have a low placenta but not bleed at all.
Best of luck!

mine moved too!, i was led to believe that most actually do, as the uterus grows upwards the placenta does move with it (usually)

no he didnt mention about the bleeding bit. thanks for letting me know.

I had grade IV Placenta Praevia. (right accross cervix) had to have GA and wait in hospital from 23 weeks, but healthy baby at the end of it all.

Had low lying placenta twice before that and they both moved out of the way with further scans.

best of luck, and try not to worry, its very common at the 20 weeks scan x

I had grade 4 and it didn't move. I have a really lovely c section at 37 weeks.
I had no bleeding at all but did takle it really easy with regards to lots of excercise and sex

magnolia74 · 24/04/2008 19:08

biglips · 24/04/2008 19:18

ive already had an emergency c-section with my dd as she was facing the wrong way in my birth canal. i hopefully to either have a elective or natural if possible but not emergency.

and yes i havent googled it on the internet as i know it would freak me out

is it totally blocking your cervix? or is it just touching?

more chance of it moving if it is just touching, or close to , rather than on the cervix

lulu - yes he said that its blocking it atm (im looking at my notes and its stated "overlying OS") and the baby is back to back atm too.

oh, why have i gotta go back in on a full bladder?

as i did drank water but was bursting before the scan took place

full bladder pushes the uterus up for a clearer picture i think

if totally overlying the internal cervical os, it is likely, IMO to be a grade 3 or 4 placenta previa, which do not move and do not allow a vaginal delivery as the risk of bleeding is too great. but i am not a doctor or MW , as you know.

biglips · 25/04/2008 09:37

ok thanks lulu for ya advice and everyone else

right gotta think how to figure to able to carry a full bladder as i dont have a strong bladder and i went to the loo twice before i drank the pint but was bursting an hour later

lulu - i just spoken to my dp and he said that the placenta is half covering the cervix. (im deaf so he heard the sonographer better than me)

I had a low placenta slightly blocking at my 20 week scan for both of my pregnancies and both times they moved by the later scan. I had a c-scetion with my second pregnancy anyway and it was fantastic so don't worry if you have to have one.
Good luck xx
