Unexplained bleeding in pregnancy (1st trimester)

Hello,
I am hoping to hear similar stories, maybe someone had an experience with this.
I am currently 8 weeks pregnant as per LMP and 7 weeks from the CRL and scans.
4 days ago I began to have brown discharge without any pain. Naturally got worried as I've not had this with my first child. Booked a private scan and been told they can't identify the source but the baby is doing well with a strong heartbeat and growing.
2 days ago I started bleeding, its only when I wiped but red blood and small clots.
Booked another scan and been told again on Wednesday that everything looks okay.
Thursday afternoon comes and I pass a large cherry size clot dark red, maybe even bigger than a cherry. No pain whatsoever, bit of a pale pink fluid came out with it in the loo. I felt it but it was completely painless.
I had mild bleeding for a few hours after (only when wiping mostly not filling any pads) and today (Friday) absolutely no blood at all! All gone. I do have a scan booked for Monday 10am which seems like a long wait but I am just wondering if there could be an explanation for the symptoms rather than worst case scenario..... Open to everyone's thoughts and thank you!

Kate

If you are based in the uk have you contacted your epu or contacted your gp for a referral? Is that who the scan is with on Monday?

londonmum1991 · 18/10/2024 16:37

Uk based but it's actually a private scan I booked.

I had bleeding in my first trimester with my second child and panicked! I had a healthy baby full term with no problems. I was constantly searching for positive info on the internet to stop me overthinking, it’s not all bad news but always safer to get it checked out. I hope all is well for your scan!

londonmum1991 · 18/10/2024 17:01

Thank you so much for your response!! It means a lot.

Have you been seen by the EPU?
I had bleeding and it wasn't good news for me but it went from spotting to heavy bleeding with cramping in less than a day. A and E and the epu checked my HCG and it halved in 16h. The scan showed no signs of pregnancy.
Bleeding is scary but I read only 1 in 3 pregnancies with bleeding end in miscarriage. It's good that you have had good scans do far and the bleeding is still mild. I hope Monday is more good news. Try to stay distracted.

I would go to your local EPU tomorrow and ask for a scan. I had bleeding at 5 weeks and 8 weeks but I didn't pass any clots. Hopefully it's good news for you.

Thank you all, I just doubt they will fit me in on the weekend (London is so full) but I will try. Appreciate everyones kind words, its such a stressful time.

Hi, I have been pregnant 3 times.
1st pregnancy I had bleeding (bright red when I wiped) and it turned out to be fine and my 2 year old is currently running around the front room.
I have recently had two losses. From my experience with the two that ended in mc, I had bad cramps and quite a lot of clots, followed by heavy bleeding. One was at 11 weeks and one was at 6 weeks. The one at 6 weeks was like a bad period.
Sounds like you might have some harmless spotting if you're not in pain or bleeding heavily.
Definitely should contact your EPU regardless, I am south London based and they were always quick to see me and very helpful. Sometimes they offer progesterone if you're still bleeding.
It's a horrible feeling when you notice blood, but it isn't always something to worry about.
Try not to drive yourself crazy Googling!
How are you doing at the moment? X

I am doing ok. The scan is booked for tomorrow 10am so I am trying to relax and just wait for hat.
Not bleeding actually, just a tiny smudge of brown discharge today.
I really am not sure what to expect but tying to stay positive. Could it still be ok...? Is is all done...? Being in limbo is very hard. Suppose to have my first midwife appointment this week too.
Thank you so much for your reply and I am so sorry about your losses. Heartbreaking...
Sending you love.

Thank you... Yeah, not knowing is really hard, it drives you mad. Glad to hear the bleeding has stopped, that's a good sign! All the best for tomorrow. I hope the scan is good news again.

Superscientist · 21/10/2024 13:36

How did you get on at your scan @londonmum1991

londonmum1991 · 21/10/2024 17:27

The scan went very smoothly. The baby is here, growing at the right speed and I am 8 weeks today. They still can't identify the reason for my bleeds but I feel very reassured and allowing myself to even get a little excited... Not every bleed means the worst! I hope this allows someone in my situation to feel reassured too. Here if you have any questions!

That is great news! So pleased for you. You can look forward to your midwife appointment now and enjoy your pregnancy. When will your next scan be, 12 weeks? X

Superscientist · 21/10/2024 19:32

That's brilliant. I hope it's smooth sailing from here x

londonmum1991 · 22/10/2024 21:06

Next scan supposedly at 12 weeks but I think I'll be too tempted to go again in a couple of weeks... of course if the bleeding comes back I'll be checking if everything is fine. So far so good though, nothing since the scan!!

Have you spoken to the epu about the bleeding?

londonmum1991 · 23/10/2024 10:20

I haven't, just the private doctor at the place where I was getting my scans. I will mention to my midwifery team this week.

OP posts:
Superscientist · 23/10/2024 13:46

I would speak to them. They can scan you and monitor your HCG and if the worst happens manage and support you through the miscarriage.
They might be able to see something on the scans that is responsible for the bleeding

Vanilla90 · 23/10/2024 19:27

Yes definitely worth going EPU, they'll scan you, then you usually speak to a midwife after. They're really good at talking through everything and answering any questions... plus it's a good excuse to see your baby on the big screen again! Smile
