Pregnant mums I need help

Mum2025 · 18/10/2024 12:09

Hi mums I need some help/ advice

So I'm 24+3 weeks and I'm FTM and I'm only feeling what I think is movements every so often and not constantly like other mums . I want to get another ultrasound so I can see with my own eyes that baby is moving and everything is fine however no one will listen to me medical wise .. I cannot afford private so that's not an option .

No one will listen to me and ease my anxiety . I've even ended up with panic attacks over worry

How do you guys get people to listen to you ??? Or what do you say for people to actually give scan .

Please if anyone sees this please let me know .
Anxious first time mum over here

@TheShellBeach I've not had movement for 3 days

You've said you've had some movement. Babies don't do a pattern till 28 weeks.

Grepes · 18/10/2024 13:01

Hi! They don’t scan for reduced movements. If you go in for reduced movements (I did a couple of times), they hook you up to monitor the heartbeat. They ask you to press a button when you feel the movement. Seems my baby was moving about but I couldn’t feel it everytime.

I had extra scans for other reasons, but not for reduced movements, they have other, better ways to monitor for reduced movements.

I know anxiety around movement is horrible, Op, but at this stage your baby is still small enough that it's probably changing positions and is kicking you but towards your back so you can't feel anything. I went in for reduced movement at 29 weeks and even at that gestation they said they can still move themselves around so the kicks are masked. Sometimes if I sit really still I can actually see her moving around but I can't even feel it and I'm almost 31 weeks and it's my third baby.

Thankyou for your kind comment . Appreciate it

Has your midwife listened in with a Doppler? I'm similar gestation to you, my midwife has said until 28 weeks procedure for reduced movements is to listen on a Doppler, from 28 weeks they can have you in to listen on the CTG machine at the hospital. As far as I'm aware, ultrasound isn't the usual recourse for reduced movements, it's Doppler or CTG depending on gestation.

Mum2025 · 18/10/2024 12:59

@TheShellBeach I NEED A SCAN BECAUSE NO MOVEMENT . Please I've put this in comments

Shouty capitals don't change the fact that you do feel movement sometimes.

You're over anxious @Mum2025 and you're imagining this massive baby kicking around. Actually, it's tiny, and it's in water, and the strong muscles of the uterus and your abdomen all mask this tiny little thing's attempts to kick.

Mum2025 · 18/10/2024 13:03

@Mum2025 I'm just adding on to this I've had no movement for 3 days . Kind comments only

I've just seen you said you haven't felt baby for 3 days so completely understand why you are panicking. Will they not get you in just to listen to the heartbeat on the doppler? Usually before 26-28 weeks they won't hook you up to the trace thing (can't remember what it's called), but if you are really worried they should still let you go in for a listen, or alternatively have you spoken to your own midwife?

You won’t get a scan for this. You’ll be monitored if you report to AAU, and that should reassure you that there is movement but you’re just not regularly feeling it yet, and babies heartbeat is fine.

You should go, if you’re concerned. Do be aware though, that the thresholds for getting a scan because of repeated reduced movements will also rule out a lot of birth options and may mean you’re induced earlier.

If you need a scan; it’ll have to be private unless and until the NHS agree a scan is required, and that’s not standard practice for lack of movement.

If it’s been three days; though, and you’re concerned, go for monitoring. That should reassure you.

That's from your OP.

Now you're changing it to "no movements for three days".

Which is it?

In any case, listening with the doppler would be the thing to do, not an ultrasound.

How do you know that other mums have constant movements anyway? You're just imagining that.

Babies don't move constantly. They sleep a lot.

Mum2025 · 18/10/2024 13:08

@readyforroundthree they struggled to find a heartbeat on the Doppler so that added to my anxiety and I just want everything to be okay

Mum2025 · 18/10/2024 12:55

@WhoOfWhoville I guess I'm just confused why they don't scan if there's no movement .

There is movement though! Your just having some days with no movement that you can feel. Its not that they dont care, its the fact they actually do know better than you as they are trained professionals.

jaybeez · 18/10/2024 13:09

Ah okay, that must be really stressful. It's also normal though for it to be hard for them to find the heartbeat at this gestation as they're still so tiny.

If you've not felt movement in 3 days I'd contact your midwife / maternity unit and ask them what the next steps are. Hopefully they should get you in to listen in again, even if it's not a scan that hopefully should provide some reassurance.

But they found it in the end? Then don’t worry about it, it can be hard to find.

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 18/10/2024 13:11

A scan isn't what you need. You are over 20 weeks so I'd give maternity triage a call at the hospital and tell them you're really anxious and haven't felt baby for 3 days. They can do a CTG which measures babies heart rate and movement, and if baby does move if you felt it. You may find baby is moving lots but you can't feel.

I also think part of it is how early you are. This is going to come across awfully but if there was a problem, you're only 24 weeks. There's vanishingly little they can do. I was in hospital regularly for bleeds at 20-28 weeks and for at least the first half they were very clear I was there so they could save me if I had a really big bleed. There wasn't anything that could be done for the baby.

TheShellBeach · 18/10/2024 13:11

Mum2025 · 18/10/2024 13:08

Of course they struggled.
The baby is tiny.

And it could have been anywhere!

OP I'm a midwife and I've had four babies myself.

Please trust me that at this stage, your baby will not move constantly, and it will sleep a lot. And it's tiny. It only weighs 1lb or about 600g.

LozC0411 · 18/10/2024 13:11

You have not once stated that there was no movement for 3 days until people started saying that no movement for a day is normal, with the level of anxiety you have I dont get why you happened to forget its now been 3 days?

readyforroundthree · 18/10/2024 13:12

@Mum2025 personally I would call the assessment unit, say you haven't felt movement in 3 days and you are really getting into a panic about it. They should let you go in and at least it will put your mind at rest.
