Fundal Height

Hello
so I am 28 weeks pregnant, I have just had my midwife appointment and my fundal height is measuring at 33cm which seems quite high on my grow chart . I am booked in for growth scans as my 2nd baby was small (6lb 3) my first baby was 8lb.
I am so worried I am going to have a huge baby .
anyone else have a high fundal measurement and baby was a good size / healthy size.
midwife didn’t say she was worried or mention it being to big at all . I don’t think my bump is that huge and very similar to how my other pregnancy’s were but this time baby is feeling lower. She is also in head down position but not engaged .
Thanks

I had this a week or so ago. Was measuring 5 weeks ahead. Had a growth scan and baby is slightly bigger than average but still totally normal! The sonographer reminded me that just because fundal height is big, doesn't mean baby is! Statistically, you have a normal sized baby in there!

Hi there it's a midwife. It's normal for the 2nd, 3rd and so forth babies not to engage until the woman goes in labour. Correspondeningly the bump often looks bigger. Your midwife is correct in sending you for the growth scan but it's too soon to worry. Do you a family history of diabetes or glucose in your urine?

Yeah I was happy she wasn’t engaged as presume that would be to early.

i don’t have any history of diabetes and havnt had any glucose in my urine . She tested my sample and that came back completely normal .

I don’t feel I am that huge in all honesty .

If she is a big baby through measurements what would that mean is it something that I would have to worry about or does it mean I just have a big baby to deliver . 🙈

I’d honestly not worry at all; I think that fundal height and growth scans are so inaccurate- everyone I know has had babies nowhere near the size predicted from measurements.

Nursemumma92 · 09/10/2024 08:36

Yes with my second my fundal height measured high from 28 weeks, I did have mild polyhydramnios at 28 weeks which resolved by 34 weeks but baby also measured big throughout. She was born at 41+2 at 7lb 10oz so not big.

Ironically, with my first I never had any growth scans as was low risk and measured within normal limits on my chart and had a 9lb baby which is pretty big for a first baby!

At this stage I wouldn't worry too much, fundal heights are notoriously inaccurate.

You really need to wait until you have a scan. They will measure the baby AND the volume of the waters. Sometimes it's the waters that make the bump look big. It's good that you don't have either family history of diabetes or glucose in your urine. It means that your risk of gestational diabetes is low. I am afraid it's a waiting game right now. When is your growth scan?

LM92020 · 09/10/2024 09:00

My growth scan is the 3rd November .

i have had them booked in from my 12 week scan as my 2nd was small .

In presume if she is getting to big towards the end they will induce me ?

i have heard from a few women that there measurements showed up as big but they went on to have average baby’s and smaller than they were told .

With my youngest, my fundal measurements, diabetes and growth scans suggested a massive baby to the point they wanted to induce early....she popped out at 7lbs a week early on her own. (a good 2lbs lighter than the scan that week suggested!)

@LM92020 my fundal height was high at every appointment and I was having growth scans every few weeks. My son was born at 37+1 and 6lb 12. From my growth scans he was showing as 90% percentile and I suppose he may have been a few pounds heavier if I got to due date. I'm only 5"1 and slim though so I guess for my size he could have been big, but obviously was born a lovely size 🙂
