Gout in pregnancy

Has anyone had gout in pregnancy, and if so what was the recommended treatment?

Im suffering with gout currently, sudden flare up. Saw my GP who was unsure on what I would be able to take other than paracetamol, and has written to obs/gyne for advice. She did tell me to start Colchchine as there was ‘low risk’ to the baby, but I’m not keen on any risks to be honest, however it’s very painful to walk so won’t be able to put up with this for the next 7 months!

Surely I can’t be the only one to suffer with gout in pregnancy…

Hi. Yes I had gout during my second pregnancy, I did have some medication from the GP but unfortunately I can't remember what it was. It is very difficult on top of everything else. Have you had gout before? I drank a lot of water and think drinking coke set it off.

I have had gout before but I thought it was red wine related, obviously I’m not drinking now do not sure what it could be! I did take febuxustat to keep it at bay, however it’s not safe in pregnancy so stopped a few weeks back.

I am having a protein rich diet, so could be that I guess! And I did have Diet Coke yesterday thinking about it!

Protein rich diet and gout!

How old are you?

Fizzy water and apple cider vinegar my Mum swears by it (not together will make you puke). Cherries too.

I also have to limit how many sweets I eat because eating lots can start an attack.

I was advised by the midwife to maintain a protein rich diet, I’m overweight according to my BMI, also 32 so high risk.

I’m 32, first pregnancy.

I don’t tend to eat sweets or sugary foods, I have always eaten a protein rich diet, I work out most days and lift weights, hence the diet.

May need to reduce the protein I think!

Rethink the protein rich diet my dietician says protein rich diets are fuelling kidney failure and gout! Some people cannot handle protein rich diets and having gout suggests you might be one of them, in pregnancy anyway. It can be about genetics too.

Hope it gets sorted soon.
