Ectopic pregnancy?

Hi all, first time posting here for me. I am 8+4 weeks pregnant. Today I woke up in the night at about 3am with lower tummy pain on the left side, which was radiating towards my back too. Called 111 and they booked me an out of hours appointment at the hospital. Doctor measured my blood pressure, oxygen and felt my abdomen (which hurt). She said it all felt fine but put me through to an early pregnancy scan to rule out ectopic pregnancy, she said I’d get a phone call to do the scan today. This was at 5am this morning, it’s been 6 hours and I haven’t yet heard anything.
Pain is still here, quite strong but I don’t think any stronger than when I first called them. Sometimes it subsides a bit, sometimes it comes on strong. Moving/laying down/standing up - nothing helps. I also also feel some swelling on the lower part of my tummy - not sure if it was there this morning or not.
Has anyone had pains and a bit of a swelling?? Could it be an ectopic pregnancy? I have no other symptoms. I know it can be a thousand other things too but I’m so scared.

Hi OP, firstly, try not to worry, I had the same thing around the same dates and it's all turned out okay! Secondly, I would call the early pregnancy unit at your local hospital, they booked me in when I was on the phone with them and had a scan the next morning (it was 3pm when I called). 💐

Hi Tdcp,
Thank you for your post that’s really reassuring. I followed your suggestion and tried to call them but mine only allows to leave a message for a call back, and that is if I am being treated by them. I know the doctor referred for a scan so left a message hopefully they call me soon. Just in a lot of discomfort and worry :(
Did your pain last a long time like this too?? And the swelling?

I was having bad pain for a day or so. I don't remember having any swelling as such but my stomach was solid. Do you have any shoulder tip pain? Light headed? My SIL had a ruptured ectopic before, she likened it to bad IBS pain for a few weeks before things ruptured. Can you call the gp back and double check everything has gone through okay? Also is the pain getting worse?

CSmumtobe · 13/09/2024 11:53

No I don’t have any other symptoms other than the tummy pain. It was an out of hours appt at the hospital booked by 111 so I don’t have their details unfortunately :( I feel like it may be a tad stronger, but then again it may just be because I’ve had it for so long now and I am getting increasingly uncomfortable and impatient. I guess I have to wait to hopefully hear back before the unit closes or go to A&E later if I don’t I guess. Thanks so much for your message again, really appreciate it. Hopefully nothing to worry about x

They can take a while to get back to you. I would suggest it is ligament pain but obviously I can't feel this myself so if you think it is something different don't be afraid to call 111 again or your own GP if you need to. If you get any other symptoms such as bleeding, you're bent over in pain, shoulder tip pain etc etc just head to a&e. Chances are everything is okay, your body is moving and stretching so much even in the very early days and it can be very uncomfortable x

sel2223 · 13/09/2024 12:02

If it starts to feel worse, go to a&e

Bananas89 · 13/09/2024 14:03

Hope you're ok. If you've not heard back yet I'd ring 111 to follow up, as well as leaving a message for the EPU if you don't get any joy there.

Think this will be a much less stressful experience for you than A&E if that can be avoided.

CSmumtobe · 13/09/2024 14:12

Thank you all for your messages and suggestions. I called 111 again and heard back from the EPU. I am going in for blood tests tomorrow morning and have a scan on Monday as they’re all booked up until then. Was told if anything gets worse to call 999 or go to A&E. Pain has subsided a bit suddenly so I am hoping this is good news and it’s nothing serious.

That's great OP! They can tell all sorts of things from a blood test so try not to worry. I hope you're feeling okay.

I had a ruptured ectopic year ago. I felt dizzy, had prune coloured light bleeding and the pain was on one side of my abdomen and was like a sharp needle pain. I couldn’t sleep with the pain. Also had shoulder tip pain.

How are you doing OP

CSmumtobe · 16/09/2024 18:29

Hi all, thanks for checking in @Tdcp :)

I finally had my scan today at the EPU and pregnancy is all fine and in the right place!! Baby is 9+2 it turns out, and I saw its little heart beat. Such a relief.

Midwife said pain may be due to two follicular cysts I have in my left ovary (either I ovulated twice or one is inactive she said?) but nothing to worry about, or pain could also be ligaments or gastrointestinal. She said if it gets bad again to rest and take some paracetamol.

Thank you all for your help :)
