Slept with a hot water bottle and now I feel like an idiot.

had really bad back pains at roughly 5 weeks 3 days pregnant and googled if I could use a hot water bottle (it said yes) I got my partner to fill one with kettle hot water then fell asleep with it now I’m panicking as google said it could cause NTD’s I feel so stupid and can’t stop panicking about it. Please someone reassure me I’m not a complete idiot.😫

You'll be fine, OP.
I promise.

BabaYagasLittleSister · 09/09/2024 18:11

I did this, and took hot baths. I had no idea you weren't supposed to. Everything was fine!

Ineffable23 · 09/09/2024 18:11

I really think the likelihood of anything bad happening will be minimal, and even if it did the likelihood of that having caused it will be even smaller still. People live in hot countries all over the world, including places where the air temperature is in the 40-50 degree range, not just using a hot water bottle.

tothelefttotheleft · 09/09/2024 18:11

Your baby is so small at this stage and applying heat to your back is very very unlikely to affect your pregnancy.

bootsroots · 09/09/2024 18:12

You're totally fine. The reason hot water bottles in particular are fine is that they cool down over time - they don't stay boiling hot all night or cover your whole body.

Neural tube defects have been correlated with prolonged periods submerged in very hot water etc. you will be fine, don't worry!

thanks all know it sounds stupid just when I googled it it all said no more than 20 minutes and I had it really hot and slept on it (although it did have a cover on) know week 5 & 6 are when NTD’s happen so had a right panic 😫🤦🏻‍♀️

The kindest thing you can do for yourself in pregnancy is step away from Google!

Beth216 · 09/09/2024 19:29

I couldn't live without a hot water bottle! You'll be fine OP.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 09/09/2024 19:32

I used a heated cushion every night when I was pregnant !

MumChp · 09/09/2024 19:33

Don't worry. You are fine!

Heyheyitsanotherday · 09/09/2024 19:35

With my second I had a bad back and spent most of my pregnancy wirh a hot water bottle strapped to me (at work, in the car, in the cinema, you name it my hot water bottle came with me 😂) She’s just started school and is fine and dandy (albeit a little sassy). I couldn’t take any painkillers but paracetamol and the hot water bottle and warm baths were all that kept me sane. Try not to worry.

Appreciate this thread hasn't been posted on in a wee while...but has everything been ok with baby? I stupidly used a hot water bottle tonight, sitting on my stomach 🙈 I've been so cold I just didn't appreciate there was a risk. I'm 5+3 xx
