Measurement of baby or gestational age???

Hi ladies!

The first day of my LMP was 23rd June, I've had multiple scans both with EPU and private as we had a loss in April, I'm also on progesterone.

Every scan I've been to, baby has been measuring 6 days ahead of what my LMP would indicate. According to my LMP I should be 10+2, but I had a scan on Sunday and again they measured baby exactly 6 days ahead which takes it to 11+1 now.

I know measurements can change all the time but every scan I've had it's been exactly 6 days. Does this mean I'm actually 11+1 or should I stick with 10+2? We're so excited to tell family but we really want to wait until we're past the 12 week mark. I'm hoping I can run with the 11+1 so I don't need to wait as long! 😂 thank you x

so what I would do is wait until your dating scan which shouldn't be long as that will be your official due date based on dates 🥰

Based on measurements*

YouveGotAFastCar · 03/09/2024 12:25

I'd wait until your 12-week scan. Measurements before then are complicated and vary a lot. Growth stabilises by 12 weeks, and then you'll be given your estimated due date, which will overrule your LMP or your earlier scan dates. It even overrules your 20 week scan date, if baby measures differently then.

It's up to you when you tell them, but if you're keen to be 12 weeks, I'd have the scan and then use that gestation/due date to work out when to tell them.

Thank youuuuuu, I have my first appointment with my midwife on Thursday so hopefully my scan won't be too far behind! It was a dating scan I had on Sunday (can't book it as a viability scan after 9 weeks) and they said my due date is around 23rd March!

I'm just so bloody impatient and want the whole world to know!! 😂🥰

Private dating scans are a bit of a con, sadly, because the dating scan needs to be done between 11 - 13 weeks.

If you've got your midwife on Thursday, you usually get your dating scan date a few days later, I believe, so hopefully not too long to wait!

12 weeks is given as a date because that's roundabout when you nornally get your first scan and they can see a heartbeat etc which suggests the pregnancy is likely to be successful. Not because at 12 weeks something magic happens which makes it safer. So if you want to know when to tell people go ny whenever your scan is, regardless of whether that makes you 11 weeks or 12.

Although you can also tell people whenever you want. Especially as you've already multiple scans so you know things are progressing fine.

I've never bought into the waiting thing but it seems extra unnecessary given you've already had the thing that people usually wait for (i.e. a scan).

Thank you all so much for your replies!

Honestly, I've only been pregnant twice, this time and then in April when we miscarried at 7 weeks. This time is completely different in terms of the whole experience and, we even saw baby jumping and wriggling away at the scan on Sunday with a beautiful heartbeat that we've seen at every scan we've been to!

It's our first baby for both myself and my partner so we're learning! I honestly think we won't be able to wait much longer to tell people so maybe we'll give it another week and see if we get our scan appointment through and go from there 🥰 thanks everyone x

If you had a scan and seen a heartbeat I really don't understand what you are waiting for now to tell people

Gentleness · 03/09/2024 12:54

I have experience with mcs and as a result told people early every time. I would not wait any more if I was you!

I think it's just out of fear if I'm honest! The scans we've had have been incredible, but when we miscarried in April we had a scan on the morning of exactly 7 weeks, saw the heartbeat then we miscarried that evening. The difference is I have no bleeding at all this time so I think my heart knows this is it and everything is okay, it's still that rooted fear you know?

We told family very early last time, they were over the moon and started buying things and making a big deal then it was just an awful feeling to have to tell them we lost the baby.

My partner is working til late all week so we've spoken and we are going to tell everyone on Saturday when we're both off so it gives us the whole day to be excited about it! Thanks so much for your input - like I say it's our first successful time so we're learning but I think you're right!

Thank you for this and I'm sorry you've had experience with it - it's honestly the worst thing I've ever been through.

No time like the present hey! 🥰

I'm currently nearly 20 weeks pregnant with our first and much longed-for IVF baby. We've had four scans so far, a viability one at seven weeks, a private reassurance scan at 10 weeks, our NHS dating scan at 12 weeks and another private reassurance scan at 16 weeks where we found out we're probably having a baby girl. We have our 20 week NHS scan next Tuesday.
We have also been terribly anxious about telling anyone as we have been so very frightened of something going wrong, still are really. Thank god, everything has been going well so far but we have decided not to tell anyone until after our 20 week scan when, please god, we'll know everything is looking good. I have a small bump but it's not yet v ery visible under clothes so we've been able to get away with nobody noticing. I think it's important to tell people whenever you feel comfortable. If your last scans have been fine then I don't think you have to wait to officially reach 12 weeks before you tell others. As other posters have said, the 12 week scan is the first many people have which is why they wait until then to tell people, but it's not a hard and fast rule. Congratulations on your pregnancy and wishing you all the best.

Thank you so much for this and congratulations love! I have everything crossed that your 20 week scan will be everything you dream of. I can't imagine how difficult pregnancy worries must be after IVF. sending you a hug!

Thank you for this 🥰 we are gonna tell everyone on Saturday as, like you said, our scans are fine and the pregnancy is progressing as perfectly as we could ask for. Thank you for your response and good luck with everything! Xxx
