What happens if you go in to labour before elected c section?

I’m 39+1 and have been having nightly on and off contractions for 2 nights now. They come every 10 minutes and last a minute each time. They are ongoing for maybe 2-3 hours. This is my third baby and third c section. I had no signs at all with my second but remember similar with my first before my waters broke, I remember having a few episodes of irregular contractions throughout the night.

My first labour and birth terrified me to the point of awful ptsd and now I’m terrified of ever going in to natural labour again, hence the elected c sections. So I was wondering if anybody has ever been in the situation before of going in to labour before their elected c section date? I’m due to go in tomorrow morning but really fear I won’t last that long.

Happened to me. They kept asking if I wanted to try vaginal delivery but I insisted on the c section and got it

Phone up and go and get checked. My waters went before my scheduled section so I had it brought forwards.

This. Ring them and they may ask you to go in early.

I had an emergency c section. Middle of the night, but surgeon was brilliant. DS was 5 weeks early.

28 years later, that is the only time he's ever been early for anything 😀

I’d give them a ring. I had an elective and they told me that if anything happened before the scheduled date then they would do an emergency Caesarian.

All the best OP X

I had the c section. I was 7cm by the time they prepped me so they asked if I was sure I didn't want to try vaginal but it was fine to say no.

I went into labour in the middle of the night a week before my c-section date. The only surgical team on overnight in maternity were doing a section when I arrived and the baby arrived so quickly, I had no option but to do it myself. When they came to get me an hour after I got there, I was already holding the baby.

MuchTooTired · 03/09/2024 10:05

I was told when I was pregnant with my DTs if I went in to labour ahead of my elcs date to go straight in to hospital and they’d do an emergency one.

Cyclingforcake · 03/09/2024 10:05

I did this and they just did the section as soon as they could. So after the true emergencies but before the electives. I was worried they wouldn’t tie my tubes but they said as I had consented for that in clinic they could go ahead if I still wanted it. (But they couldn’t have taken my consent for it as it was now demoed an emergency section).

DownWhichOfLate · 03/09/2024 10:07

@StarsOnAMat - that read to me as you performed the surgery yourself! 😂 But congratulations on managing, I hope it wasn’t too traumatic!

I had an emergency section for my first, and a planned one for my second. I had to go in a week early, and it turned out I was having regular contractions, although I couldn't feel them. My husband had just left with our toddler (before mobile phones) so I had to make strategic landline calls to get him to get him back, as they took me straight to theatre. I was prepped and the anaesthetic was going in as he arrived in the nick of time to see her born.

If things had moved faster (goodness knows how I couldn't feel the contractions, as I was 6 cm dilated) they would have done an emergency section, but there was no need.

Thank you so much everybody!!

Well, baby has stayed put and I am up ready to head to the hospital in about an hours time. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t absolutely terrified. Different experience this time as my mum is coming with me and not my partner. We have two children already as I mentioned, one being a very shy and sensitive little 18 month old and another who’s 6 with quite severe additional needs and has his first day of school. It’s really crap but not much we can do tbh.

I am hoping I’m one of the first to go down as honestly I am so incredibly anxious and nervous I could cry!!! Wish me luck!!

Best of luck, OP...you've got this Star

Pigeonqueen · 04/09/2024 07:35

Hope it goes well - and hope your son has a good first day at school (my son has complex needs and attends a specialist school too). Thinking of you ❤️

My waters broke the night before my scheduled c-section, minimal contractions but they kept me overnight in case that changed and the op was then done in the morning. Due to the awkward position of my baby, they said they would perform emergency op during the night if needed. Ring the hospital and let them know.

Nannyfannybanny · 04/09/2024 07:50

This happened to me! It was 1970, thankfully things have changed. DD was a big baby for me and LL breach. Already in hospital for pre eclampsia, booked CS. Waters broke, nurse was horrible, said it was rubbish and I had obviously wet myself! This was mid afternoon. Evening, panic,no surgeon available, trying to aspirate stomach because I had eaten. Had my emergency CS at 10.15 PM. It took 5 years before I could bring myself to have another. I had full blown ps afterwards. Thank god it's completely different now, I had 3 more DKs,was lucky I found an ob/gynae (terrifying older unmarried no kids) who was happy to oversee VB.

@Lefmry - best of luck! My 3rd section was my favourite 😃. Do let us know how it goes ❤️

ShyMaryEllen · 04/09/2024 12:28

Good luck! Your baby will be in your arms very soon.

Lefmry · 06/09/2024 07:06

Thanks again everybody! My little girl arrived in to the world Wednesday at 2pm! I was SO nervous before going down, way worse than I was with my son last January. But glad it’s all done and we were sent home at 5pm the next day! ☺️❤️
