Lying on back

I know you shouldn't lie on your back but I cant remember why right now.

Is it from as soon as you get pg or later on in pregnancy?

I can only get comfy on my back and I am desperatly trying to get comfy lying on my side. The bloody annoying thing is that I normally sleep on my side but as soon as I get pg I can't.

I think it is from 20 weeks onwards only. The reason is that it may crush your main arthery (spelling?) which means that you can have a variety of problems including I think DVT. I have heard that provided you put loads of pillow either to raise you back or to raise you bum a little you should be fine. I am no expert though

You don't need to worry about sleeping on your back until late 2nd trimester or even nearer the third trimester. The reason not to sleep on your back is because when the baby is bigger it presses on a major artery which can slow your blood flow to the baby and your own head which can make you feel dizzy.

The best position to lie in is on your left hand side for optimum blood flow but right side is okay too. I also read that if you really can't sleep on your side and only on your back try raising your back slightly on the right side by a few inches by using a blanket or pillow - just on that side as that takes the pressure off the vein. Good luck
