WiseDog · 30/08/2024 13:19

First I want to start off I went to hospital this week they told me baby had duodenal obstruction said it was a cyst or a Hernia but nope much worse seen the consultant specialist who then told me baby had duodenal obstruction with his bowls and would need surgery soon as he's born she said its all down to down syndrome and that I would need amnio test so had that this morning got to wait 3 days thou for test results, people say you can tell by looking at scan picture does my baby look normal or down syndrome? The hospital said do I want to end pregnancy I told them let me take one day at a time and get the results first I am 33 weeks gone didn't know u could end a pregnancy this late been in tears for last couple of days ... knowing he got to have surgery soon as he's born and now downs and he might have a small hold in heart but can't tell yet cuz imaging not clear ... please look at photo and see if he looks like he got down syndrome... I have 3 other kids none of them got it x

I'm sorry you're having such a worrying time. Nobody can tell you from the scan pictures so just ignore anyone who tries to guess either way.

It's a horrible wait but the amnio results should give you an answer.

What the doctor was saying is that these conditions are more common in babies with Down Syndrome, but they happen in babies without it as well so it's not guaranteed.

Mushroo · 30/08/2024 13:24

I don’t have any knowledge but did you not get checked for Downs etc at the 12 week scan?

HedgehogB · 30/08/2024 13:25

I think it’s very difficult to tell from your scans . You have had a shock, it’s understandable how you feel. but the surgery is manageable. Try to stay calm. Down Syndrome is not a disaster - most children with it do extremely well. Try to research all you can , just in case. I follow an Instagram account called downrightwonderful. The family have a son with DS and love him so much they have adopted another little boy with Downs as well. But you don’t know anything yet. Try to be calm. Hugs x

Unfortunately no one here can tell you from the scan. Did you not have the combined screening at your 12 week scan? That would have picked up if there was a high risk the baby has Down’s syndrome.

peachgreen · 30/08/2024 13:28

You might want to get the scan images removed OP as they show your full name and date of birth.

You get offered a screening test at around 12wks and if you're lower risk (depends, but usually lower risk than 1:150) there are usually no more tests unless you pay privately.

Having a lower risk result doesn't mean the baby isn't affected, just that the risk is low. Sometimes things are found later on that increase that risk so that it's now worth considering further testing - still just a risk though, not a diagnosis.

Newsenmum · 30/08/2024 13:30

Scan looks very very normal. Im so sorry you are going through all this.

PipMumsnet · 30/08/2024 13:37

Hi OP, we are so sorry you're going through this. Unfortunately your scans contain your personal details so we have removed them from your opening post. We hope you understand, the last thing you need is your personal information being online.
Wishing you the very best.

Poor you and poor baby, what a lot to go through. I couldn't tell you from these scans if your child has downs - did they take any images of a hand or a foot? Downs children have a wider hands and a big gap between big toe and the next, so I would have thought if they suspected downs they would have been looking at the hands and feet. Love the idea of following downrightwonderful, and there are probably groups for parents with children in the same condition as your growing baby, who will be able to offer support. I wish you all the best with your new addition to the family.

I went for a private scan around 24 weeks they told me everything was fine and then the NHS scan was a week later they checked everything then and said everything was fine ... they did say it might have only just happened as baby is now older x

OP posts:
WiseDog · 30/08/2024 14:04

They didn't offer me a test for down syndrome back then because they said everything was fine that's why I can't get head around it ,when had my first growth scan they only picked up on his belly which was said it was cyst but nope they have to wait until 33 weeks gone then tell me everything he got this and that x

That only gives a likelihood score. It’s not diagnostic unless you have an amnio or CVS.

WiseDog · 30/08/2024 18:45

I have said in the 1st message and last message I had the amnio done this morning but have to wait 3 days ,was just seeing if people had a down syndrome kid and compare my scan with theirs if they could x

Yes I was replying to the other person who questioned why you hadn’t been offered it earlier.

Aww thanks don't know why they left it so late the excuse was because they only just picked his bowl problem up and linked with down syndrome, when got first scan and checked everything they said everything was fine and went home so shows you things can easily go wrong, just don't know what todo if comes back with down syndrome because the hospital said do I want end pregnancy and at minute 33 weeks gone x I have a disability myself lost of limb but wasn't downs it was just an accident x

WiseDog · 07/09/2024 14:08

@Glitter0 aww thanks x it's no fault of his own it just happens can't get rid of him of a disability, me too got a disability lost a limb so wouldn't be fare they said to me I was 1 in million chance of getting compartment syndrome and with caden he was 1 in 200 chance too so we both just unlucky but I am sure he will be happy x
