Does anyone have experience of progesterone pessaries? I’m prescribed 400mg twice daily due to a previous miscarriage and early bleeding this pregnancy. I’m now 10 weeks and meant to continue them until 16 weeks. I’d been inserting them vaginally but I’m on my second horrible bout of thrush so I changed to rectally but this causes me horrible stomach cramps and diarrhoea! I can’t win! I don’t know how to move forward with them ! Any advice is so welcome right now!! I’m trying natural coconut oil to treat thrush symptoms but it doesn’t seem to be helping yet 😭 praying this baby stick and it will all be worth it 🌈

I had this problem and felt so horrible on them, my tummy was so off and sorry tmi but like orange watery diarrhea.... I made the choice to stop them...all was fine for me. I'm not saying you should stop them, but I obviously didn't need them. I'm not sure there's anything you can do tbh x

Thanks for replying, it’s awful isn’t it! I’m just really struggling with pregnancy after loss and I’d be so scared to stop them! I wonder if I can push through the next 2 weeks and ask to stop at 12 weeks because I think only reason they say 16 weeks is because that’s what happened in the clinical trial!

Hey! Another progesterone pessary gal here and I know your pain. It’s hard but I keep telling myself it’s not as hard as another miscarriage (had 4 in total), so that’s keeping me going.

I do my morning one rectally and the night time on vaginally. I thought maybe if I spilt them, the after effects only be as bad. I’m 11 weeks in now and seem ok, despite massively excessive bloating and the same orange watery diarrhoea that @Anonaust mentioned.

I will definitely keep going with them as long as I need to, but I haven’t felt very comfortable on them at all.

Fingers crossed they work for you!

I might continue vaginally tonight and tomorrow morning then switch to rectally over the weekend so I’m closer to a toilet with not being at work! I’m a nurse so can’t run out an appointment to poop 😂 hopefully the diarrhoea settles down after a few days or something!
Hoping this progesterone hell gives us both our little rainbows 🌈 ❤️

Yes I know what you mean I was petrified of another loss but I also have other children and I couldn't even function I was that poorly on them, the consultant said it's trial and error with me they didn't know I actually needed them and by the symptoms I possibly didn't, I managed till 10 weeks and was having scans every 2 weeks, it was ok for me I had my rainbow in April this year. Good luck to you both 🤞

This will be my 5th and final one 🫢😂

I take them for IVF and stuck to rectally as I had some spotting when taking them vaginally which scared me but my consultant said was likely due to the pessaries. They are horrible. No two ways about it - you have to just keep going. I’m done with mine a week now and I was counting down the days!!!! You can do it and it’ll be worth it @Bash95

OhWell45 · 29/08/2024 21:59

Can you ask for the oil instead? Although, you'll have to do injections into your bum or thighs.

I found the injection much easier than the pessaries.

I’m scared either way ! The recurrent thrush worries me that it will have an impact on the baby or rectally I'm getting such bad stomach cramps that I keep worrying I’m miscarrying again! I pray this little one keeps growing and this next 6 weeks fly by 😅

Oooo I have no idea! I’m not sure if it will be an option cause really I’m only getting progesterone as a precaution but I’ll defo ask now! Since I’m a nurse injecting myself would be no problem 😂

The oil is pretty nasty - I had to take it as well and I’m badly bruised and all lumps - still painful sitting down. There’s a progesterone injection into the stomach called Prolutex. It’s a bit stingy but fine and could be a good option if you don’t mind injections.

I'm sorry @Bash95 it’s tough.

I hated them I can never prove it but was convinced they were the reason i felt so awful and sick I was only prescribed them until 12 weeks because of a previous loss , my almost 12 week old is asleep on my chest right now so as hard as it was it was all worth it x

This is why I wonder if I could stop them at 12 weeks instead of 16 🤔 so happy they helped you get your rainbow too 🌈 ! Thanks for all the comments ladies it’s good to know you aren’t alone!
P.S I think the coconut oil might have worked a little as thrush symptoms seem to be lessening 🤞

Hello, do you have an update on this did the awful diahorea continue? I am also doing these rectally twice a day and will have spontaneous watery poops hours after 🧡

Hey I actually switched back to vaginally cause I couldn’t deal with the cramps giving me anxiety that there was something wrong! The thrush stopped and I’m now 18+3 and stopped them at 16 weeks and all food so far ☺️

Glad you're sorted now.

I was going to say on case it helps anyone else here, I used Crinone which is a gel that comes in a little applicator that you just squirt in, now sure if that might be a good alternative to pessaries or injections. Annoyingly I had it alongside pessaries, but I'm sure it irritated less.

@Bash95 i know this was almost a year ago but I’ve been taking progesterone rectally since 5 weeks due to previous losses. I’ve had abdominal tenderness within an hour of inserting them and then when I wake up I’m also in pain with them. It feels like my muscles are torn in my lower stomach, I also get the orange residue/mess when using the toilet (oh the lengths we go to). Is this how you would describe your pain? I didn’t go with vaginally because I have a history of getting UTI’s and subsequently thrush from antibiotics. The idea of bleeding from irritation also put me off! Just not sure if it’s the progesterone or something else but all my scans so far are tracking great with a HB. I’m 12 weeks 4 days

Also I did switch back to vaginally cause I couldn’t handle it and I used thrush cream pretty much the whole time which did make it easier to take cause the thrush stopped coming back !
