Feme Gel Pads for post birth tears/stitches/sore bits!!

I bought some Feme Gel Pads from Mothercare the other day as I had such a terrible time with stitches after giving birth to DD1. You put them in the freezer then slip them into a gauze slip and apply to the delicate area . Sounds like a brill idea to me, but then started wondering... How do you wear them next to the sore/delicate bit when you've got a great big maternity pad on and are bleeding for several weeks?!?!
Has anyone used them successfully??

I used them after a 2nd degree tear & stitches with DS1 and found them a godsend! As far as I can remember I just put them on top of the pad - obviously gauze slip gets mucky but that gets thrown away and replaced (I think they come with about 40 slips initially and you can buy extras?). It's been about 3 years since I used them so memory a bit blurry, but I know I bought them after hospital recommended them and they were definitely helpful.
