Hi all

ive to get a scan tomorrow due to cramping . I had a miscarriage earlier in the year.

i will be roughly 5 weeks, 5 days. Will they be able to detect much at this stage? I imagine I’m a few weeks from them being able to detect a heart beat?

At this stage all you can really expect them to tell you is where your pregnancy is located (i.e. ectopic or not), and if the gestational sac is present and looks ok. No guarantee of detecting a heartbeat this early but you might get lucky

Do you definitely know when you ovulated? So you know you are exact 5 weeks 5 days? I do honestly think an early scan at this stage some give less reassurance x

I’ve been tracking periods and ovulation etc so I’m pretty certain on dates. It was the midwife who requested I come in for the scan because of the cramping I’ve been experiencing.

@Azure6 Okay if you’re pretty sure on ovulation if you’ve been tracking with OPK then for sure you should seen a sac and yolk sac, some people do see a heartbeat before 6 weeks. But even if you don’t, don’t think that is bad news! I didn’t see a heart heart until plus 6 weeks :)
I only mentioned as I had a scan at 5 weeks and we didn’t see much which made me feel bad for a week - like something was wrong! But it wasn’t, I just must of ovulated later then my app says x

I had a scan at exactly that time during my second pregnancy and could see a gestational sac but nothing else yet - but sonographer was positive that it was appropriate for gestational age. Went back a week and a half later and a foetal pole and a heartbeat.

had the same at 5w this pregnancy, and same thing. Please don’t be disheartened if you only see a sac :) x

You don't normally see/hear a heartbeat until between 6 and 7 weeks so I think it may be a bit early for that.
Hopefully you will see the gestational sac and MAYBE a yolk sac/fetal pole too.
Mainly it will be to check that your uterus looks OK and the pregnancy is located in the right place (not ectopic for example)

Thank you all. The midwife did say it was very early and not to be worried if no heartbeat etc. they said I would be invited back for another scan in a few weeks. Just want to go well informed so it hopefully alleviates some anxieties following the miscarriage.

Hello all,

my scan showed a gestational sac. They did bloods and they came saying my hcg levels are higher than what you anticipate, looking at my scan. I’ve to get a repeat scan and more bloods in the morning. Anyone have any experience of this.

@Azure6 Hi similar happened to me. First scan they only saw sac and bloods were high. I went back couple days later to repeat my bloods and scan. Bloods shown HCG has more than doubled and scan show sac, yolk sac and tiny tiny fetal pole. Try to not over worrying ! 💗🙏🏼
