Propess Pessary doing nothing

JodiL · 13/08/2024 06:54

Hiya :)
I had my propess pessary put in yesterday at 11am.
I have had no pain or anything different to what I have had on a normal pregnant day.
Likelihood is I'll have it in for up to 30 hours, so until 4pm.
Just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience where it's been in all that time and had no side effects, cramps/pain, but maybe still had some progress with dialtion/effacement at least and then what was the next step.

Or just any propess pessary stories where it took a little while.
Thank you in advance xx

Are you in the hospital or at home? Has it been checked that it's still in the right place?

JodiL · 13/08/2024 07:18

I'm in the hospital.
No one has checked it. I have had my obs done a couple of times but not had the pessary checked.

Do you think I should ask them to do a check?

I think so if nothing at all is happening, it is meant to be really high up at the back to be effective

SwayingInTime · 13/08/2024 07:41

New midwife for today should be saying hello soon so good time to ask

dumpling123 · 13/08/2024 07:53

I had propess pessary. Nothing happened. 24 hours later, they added gel. Baby born 12 hours later

seaduck · 13/08/2024 07:57

If it gives you any hope. I had one in for 20 hours before anything started happening so about the time you are now. I reckon it could still happen in the next few hours, it's not impossible.

MissRainbowBrite · 13/08/2024 08:23

Are you able to get up and go for a walk around the hospital? Mine definitely worked when I was active, we did many laps of the hospital and grounds, up and down stairwells helped lots too.
Good luck for things kicking in today

JodiL · 13/08/2024 08:30

Thanks everyone.

I just spoke to midwife and asked some questions. She said that it'll stay in for 30 hours (which will be 5pm today) and that hopefully I'll be able to go up to delivery suite after that if I am dilated enough. Feels like forever away though!

She said there is still time for it to start working and that if I don't feel like it's moved or been pulled out at all (which I don't) then they will avoid checking to keep cervical checks to a minimum.

Went for a few walks yesterday and will do that same again today :)

Awesome to hear about it taking 20 hours! That does give me some extra hope :) thank you

💙

Hi @JodiL
I know this is an old post but am currently staying on induction suite, had the pessary inserted yesterday but don't feel any difference as of yet 😅 been about 14 hours and they will check after 24 hours. How did yours progress? I'm planning a few walks today, up and down stairs, using the ball etc to help things along 🤞🏼as dont feel like anything has happened yet! Cervix was 3cm, high and firm when they inserted it.
I hope all worked out well for you and you made it to delivery quickly!

LuluDelulu · 13/04/2025 07:49

Didn’t work for me either. I didn’t fancy going through having waters broken etc and the drip after 48 hours of no change so I requested to go straight to C section.

LuluDelulu · 13/04/2025 07:50

If you find cervical checks etc painful you can request gas and air btw. They don’t tell you this but they should give it if you ask.

JodiL · 13/04/2025 08:12

@VioletCookie
Heya.
Unfortunately it didn’t end up being a speedy process for me.
I went up to the delivery ward and was checked and had barely dilated at all.
They considered sending me back to the induction suite for a different form of induction (which I wasn’t keen on as it meant my partner staying away from me for another night). In the end they decided to break my waters and get me on the oxytocin drip.
My waters didn’t break properly the first or 2nd time! And it was only on the 3rd time that my midwife finally managed it.
In the end I spent over 48 hours trying to labour to have a vaginal birth but I only got to 4cm and I was already a week and a half overdue, so I ended in an emergency c section.
It’s probably not what you want to hear, but you’re doing all the right things. Take some walks, bounce on the ball, try to relax as much as you can.
I have a very healthy and happy 8 month only boy sleeping next to me right now and although my birth plan went totally out the window! And it wasn’t what I had hoped for, the end result is very much worth it 🥰 I had all sorts of checks and different types of pain management throughout so if you want to ask anything else I’ll keep and eye out today and answer anything for you ❤️ xxx

@JodiL Thank you so much for replying and so quickly!! Sorry it was so drawn out for you, I have a feeling I could be a slow burner too although CTG is currently showing contractions that I can't feel. Am 39 weeks and being induced early due to a blood clotting condition, so perhaps little one kust isnt ready to come out! How did you find the c section and recovery? I hope all went OK for you. Congratulations on the baby boy! I bet none of it mattered once he was in your arms x

JodiL · 13/04/2025 10:07

@VioletCookie
Aw no problem at all.
I also had contractions I couldn’t feel and then very strong ones I couldn’t feel even on the oxytocin drip, but that was due to my waters not having been broken correctly the first time. I felt them once they were done properly!
I think even at a week and a half overdue he wasn’t ready to come out 😂 or my body just wasn’t up for giving birth haha.
Because i was so tired by the time I had the c section, I didn’t have the best time with it as I hadn’t slept for so long and just felt exhausted so I was a little panicky, but the second he was in my arms all the fear was gone and then we were in a cosy room with our boy :)
They were all very kind though and the process was smooth and I was looked after well.
Healing was pretty good. I did have some pain, which is to be expected, but after about 2 weeks I was feeling pretty good again!
Thank you for the congratulations 🙌 He is perfect.
It is hard to relax once you feel the pain, but I think that had I been more relaxed and practiced some more breathing and moved about a bit more etc then maaaaybe my body would have been up for dilating more. So definitely trying to remember those things could be helpful ❤️
Honestly though, next time I’ll wait and see if it happens without intervention and if not I’ll go straight to c section again as I’d rather not go through the induction process again. Keeping fingers crossed for you that it works though xxxx

@JodiL thank you for sharing that, it's been such a long 36 hours and I know there's so much more to come 😅 pessary is now out and didn't do anything so the gel is in. Which means cervix still high and closed so I'm expecting a 5 day slog on this ward before we move onto either delivery. On the plus I'm exhausted so should sleep well tonight! Thank you for the positive thoughts also! Xx

@LuluDelulu sorry I didnt see your response! I'm debating the same, I'd like to push as im terrified about having a c section but whatever is safest is fine. How did you find recovery? Im not enjoying the induction process at all, mostly because of how impatient I am! X

JodiL · 15/04/2025 08:51

@VioletCookie
I hope that you’re doing well xxx

@JodiL have been feeling fed up 😅 first gel got me to 1cm with lots of contractions, second gel to 1.5cm with contractions, third gel with no contractions and still 1.5cm. Have been told I'll have my final exam and gel at midday, but if that doesn't get me to 2cm we'll go on the c section list. Feeling a bit rubbish about it but ultimately know whatever is best for baby is what needs to happen!

Long story short we've been through years of IVF treatment, which resulted in 5 babies being lost. So I'm angry at that my body doesn't seem to work, but I know it's just trauma I've held onto and i've probably romanticised the birth a lot more than I would have! So it's ok, I've just had a walk, music on headphones and about to do an eye mask so feeling a bit more zen already!

Thanks for checking in xxx
