Positive test now negative?

Hi, so abit of background info, I have PCOS and irregular periods. DD took 2 years to conceive due to this. Last period was a couple of months ago and I’m not currently TTC but however did have unprotected sex once a few weeks ago as I thought our odds were low and we do want more in future so if it were to happen now it definitely wouldn’t be unwanted.

had some slight cramping to one side and got a clear blue with weeks indicator and to my surprise it said ‘Pregnant 1-2 weeks’ this was on 1st August

i didn’t get any more tests as I knew from past experiences that these tests usually require a higher level of Hcg so just accepted that result (false positives are rare) After the news sunk in I started to calculate how far I am to book an early reassurance scan so picked up another clear blue around (6-7th August) to see if the weeks indicator went up to 2-3 or 3+. It said Not pregnant, I went and got a couple cheaper brands and first response and all of them negative? Not even a faint line?

has this happened to anyone else? I’m assuming it was a chemical from looking online? GP said to take another test in a week and go by that result but I forgot to ask what happens if it is a chemical? When would I bleed? No cramping or bleeding as of yet etc but my boobs started hurting this evening and something just feels off.

To be honest it does sound like a chemical, im sorry this is happening to you. I've had a few of them, always started bleeding a couple of days after the pregnancy test went to negative. Was over fairly quickly and felt like a heavy period really. That's not to diminish what's happening, just an idea of what to expect. Generally manageable at home, if it's getting worse or you have other symptoms it's best to get checked out.

Forgot to add that i also donated my platelets about a week after unprotected sex. Maybe this is why it didn’t develop after implantation?

I also find it odd that 3 out of 6 tests I took after the 6/7th August had failed the control line? I’ve taken over 100 tests when TTC with DD and didn’t have that once but 3 times this week? All different brands and different urine sample with each

Thank you for replying, I’m sorry you went through this too! I was scared to begin with as we’re looking to move and would prefer to have gotten abit healthier before TTC (bmi on the higher side atm) but when it turned negative we both felt abit sad and now OH wants to try. Surprisingly I haven’t heard of chemicals before, I find myself waiting to bleed but having more pregnancy symptoms pop up 🤔I don’t usually get sore boobs with my periods… could the sac be developing without a baby?

Sadly this does sound like a chemical. The same happened to me in May, positive and strong one week, stark negative the week later. It's tough going.

For me, I tested negative a week later and my period came 3 - 4 days after that. I did find that period more difficult, it did seem to have symptoms I don't usually have.

I believe that if the sac was still developing, you'd still be testing positive, as you'd need HCG for anything to be continuing to grow, but I'm not an expert.

Sorry you went through this! Want an emotional rollercoaster. I have kind of accepted it was most likely a chemical but curious if anyone else had a different outcome…

has anyone ever had this happen and not had a period after?

hi, this happened to me before. I got a positive home test then a few days later no test line or control line. Also no period came, so I waited a month and went to the gp who done bloods. Unfortunately I had a molar pregnancy, and they basically said that my hgc was so high it invalidated the tests. Hope this isn’t what is happening to you. I did go in to have two healthy babies after this. Take care x

Thank you for sharing, sorry to hear about you experience with a molar pregnancy ❤️‍🩹 I did just call my local gynaecology assessment unit and mentioned my symptoms and a molar and she said it would still show positive but to take another test in the morning and call gp and ask to test hcg in my blood

did you have negatives as well as no control line? I find it so strange to have 3 failed tests x

i tested one positive test, then a few days later got a bunch of tests and they all came up blank in each window. I got more and the same thing again, all different brands too. I waited on a period but nothing came. I was only 19 at the time so just carried on with life for a month and again no period and blank tests so went to the doctor, who done a blood test, because even the urine test in the gp’s room (dipstick test) appeared with no lines. I got a call a few days later confirming I was pregnant, and I was booked in for a scan a few weeks later. At the scan they confirmed a molar and my hgc levels were over 1 million. This had started antvybe end of January and my scan was the April, so pretty dragged out, but spent a few weeks thinking I was having a baby and getting excited. Hopefully you will get some good news tomorrow 🤞🏼x

Thanks @MissMarvelMum I’ve been reading up on molars and it sounds quite scary! So pleased you got two healthy babies though!

negative this morning.. I rang GP for appointment regarding positive/negative but absent bleeding and the receptionist rang back and told me the doctor saw me on the 7th and said if it was still negative to leave it. I explained I’ve accepted negative result but hadn’t any bleeding and would like my hcg checked to rule out molar etc or confirm the chemical but she told me to just wait.

They said to ‘give them a call back when it’s positive’ I said it was positive and now negative but I have no bleeding with more pregnancy symptoms and negative or blank tests.

Would of felt better if they had just said it can take some time and give it a few more weeks and we will test but to not let me speak to the doctor myself is a little frustrating…I’m not a frequent visitor to them either

I had a MMC in 2020 when I was supposed to be 11 weeks but had an 8 week sac and 6 week foetus no pole - they told me to wait another week before D&C but it did expel on on it’s own in that week

It is a bit of a waiting game at this point, sadly. They don't like to do HCG tests as you need two or three, two days apart, to really get any data - and even then, it's not comprehensive in some cases.

It is really frustrating not to know, though.

I called the midwives for advice after and they told me to go back to doctors and request they test hcg so I did that and now waiting for results! I’m assuming if it’s low/nill then will be a chemical or false positive if they’re abnormally high then molar? I guess time will tell.. will keep the thread update if anyone else if going through similar x

Ahh im surprised but pleased that they tested for you!

If you haven’t started bleeding, you’ll likely return a number, and then you’ll need another test 48 hours after the first and possibly another one too, so you’ve got three tests 48 hours apart. The numbers by themselves don’t mean much, but you’ll be able to use the three to work out if it’s going up, down, or stable xx
