6+4 scan measured 5+2

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with a positive outcome. Due to previous miscarriages and the time it took to conceive I went for a reassurance scan on what should have been 6 weeks and 4 days. They said they could see a pregnancy measuring 5 weeks and 2 days, at this point it would be too early to see a heartbeat so the scan is inconclusive and the advice is to go back in two weeks for another scan to see if the pregnancy has progressed. I’m pretty sure of my dates and usually have regular periods. Looking for some reassurance as right now I’m really worried

That's very normal so early on.

It's also why these early scans are hopeless for reassurance. The NHS will scan you for dates at 12 weeks. You'll get a better idea then.

But going by all the threads on here about this issue, you have nothing to worry about.

I understand your anxiety as I lost a lot of babies myself, but sizing a tiny pregnancy accurately at this stage is very tricky. There are literally millimetres in it.

I'll keep you in my thoughts. Hope all is well.

Peonies12 · 20/07/2024 13:21

It’s so hard with previous losses but this is why it’s best to wait for a scan til you are 7-8 weeks. It’s very common to measure behind, and the measurements at that stage are so tiny, it’s not that accurate. Hope all fine at next scan.

@TheShellBeach thank you so much for replying. I’m sorry to hear that you’ve lost babies x
That’s what my husband keeps telling me, he’s trying to be positive but I just can’t help but feel that being 9 days out with dates is a bit much. I also feel that since the scan a few days ago I’ve lost/ losing my pregnancy symptoms

To ease your worrying, I would probably buy some of those digital tests that tell you how many weeks pregnant you are.

If they remain at 3+, then you know things will be ok. If they start to drop back to 1-2 weeks, then you know it's not going to end well.

I had a fair few miscarriages, and I found myself doing the digitals constantly. It was expensive but it eased my mind/gave me answers.

85star85 · 20/07/2024 13:26

@Peonies12 I do wish I’d just waited but the anxiety got the better of me and we paid for a private early scan. I really don’t want to go back to the private clinic for another scan in 2 weeks as the whole experience was just awful, the Sonographer was just so matter of fact. I know he was just doing his job and he’s not there to give me reassurance but the overall experience was awful! EPU won’t offer me a rescan in 2 weeks so I guess I’ll have to go back to the private clinic :(

Honestly, pregnancy symptoms come and go all the time.

I eventually had four successful pregnancies, and the symptoms were different in all four, and they came and went, especially in the earliest weeks.

Dumdeedahdumdeedo · 20/07/2024 13:28

Like you I'd had several miscarriges so had an early scan booked with my DD

My last period has been 7 weeks ago so I aent to the scan expecting to be 7 weeks. I was 5 weeks pregnant. The sonographer said it was possible that I'd ovulated later in my cycle

DD is now 9 years old and was my 5th pregnancy and is my eldest living child

TheShellBeach · 20/07/2024 13:29

Is there another private clinic you can attend, if the man scanning you wasn't sympathetic?

85star85 · 20/07/2024 13:29

@buma so sorry to hear that you’ve had a fair few miscarriages, it’s just so hard isn’t it x
after the scan I did a clear blue digital which said 2-3 weeks, the chart on the leaflet said that doctors would measure this as 4-5 weeks pregnant as they go by date from LMS whereas the clear blue test is date from conception. I guess this should have said 3+ if baby is measuring at 5+2 but I’ve read a lot about the weeks indicator being inaccurate

I had a scan around 8 weeks and I was measuring 6 days behind. At 12 weeks I was measuring ahead and he's 2.5 Yr old now. Early scans are very hard to measure

85star85 · 20/07/2024 13:33

@Dumdeedahdumdeedo so sorry to hear of your miscarriages, really happy to hear you went on to having a daughter :) x

Could I ask if they saw a heartbeat in the 5 week scan?

85star85 · 20/07/2024 13:34

@TheShellBeach i don’t know of any other private clinics in my area. My midwife is trying to get me a rescan in 2 weeks at my local hospital, fingers crossed she’s able to get me an appointment

Ovulation could have been later and so could have been implantation.

Did you have a transvaginal scan?

This is within the realms of ‘normal’ - but early early pregnancy scans are like a snap shot in time. Unless you see signs of bleeding you can’t see what’s happened the day before or what’s going to happen the day after.

Asking your GP for a HCG blood test will be the quickest way to find out if the pregnancy is progressing,

Try not worry too much / I see this a lot x

85star85 · 20/07/2024 13:38

@Suzieandthemonkeyfeet My sister keeps telling me the same to reassure me. It was a transvaginal scan. I’ve spoken to EPU, the midwife and my GP and they don’t take bloods to measure HCG at the moment. I think it’s because I haven’t had any spotting or bleeding

Rycbar · 20/07/2024 13:53

I recently had a MMC so my ending isn’t a happy one but there was a huge discrepancy between what the private scan measured 7mm (with no heartbeat) and what my follow up at the the EPU (the next day) where they measured it as 2.4mm. Even though I was highly anxious during my pregnancy I don’t think I’d have an early scan again as I’m not sure how accurate they are!

85star85 · 20/07/2024 13:59

@Rycbar so sorry to hear that you’ve recently had a MMC, I think this is what I’m afraid of. Do you think that one scan was measuring the sac and the other was measuring the embryo itself? I’ve read that this happens. But yes, I agree, really regret having the private scan. It was supposed to give me reassurance but instead it’s increased my anxiety levels massively!

OP posts:
Rycbar · 20/07/2024 15:01

I only tell you this to say that there could be a discrepancy. Baby could be bigger than they’ve said and all would be fine.
I was further along - should have been 8 weeks and private said I was 6.4 weeks EPU said 5. I really hope your story ends differently to mine!!

This doesn't always work with missed miscarriages unfortunately. I was on 3+ perfectly on track and getting dye stealers on normal tests but still was measuring 5 weeks at 7 and at a 2 week rescan nothing had changed. Your body doesn't always recognise the miscarriage so HCG stays high.

85star85 · 20/07/2024 18:14

@PaperSheet this is what I fear has happened to me. Getting dye stealers too at the moment but appreciate this doesn’t mean much :(

@Dumdeedahdumdeedo so sorry to hear of your miscarriages, really happy to hear you went on to having a daughter :) x

Could I ask if they saw a heartbeat in the 5 week scan?

No no heart beat, literally just a fetal pole and a little dot

85star85 · 23/07/2024 15:53

@Dumdeedahdumdeedo oh wow so pretty much what’s happened to me. I have another scan on Friday, I’m praying for the same outcome. I’m not too hopeful as I feel like I’m getting the same symptoms I get before I start my period (a little hot and clammy)

OP posts:
YouveGotAFastCar · 23/07/2024 15:55

This happened to me. At the next scan; they could see a heartbeat, but dated him younger.

At around 14 weeks he caught up, and then dated a week ahead for my whole pregnancy, but they insisted on using the 12 week date for the whole thing.

I hope it goes okay x

85star85 · 23/07/2024 16:02

@YouveGotAFastCar So pleased it worked out for you xx
I’m trying to remain hopeful until my next scan which is on Friday but it’s really hard not to worry. As mentioned earlier, I feel like I’m getting symptoms I usually get before my period starts. Almost hot and cold and clammy so I wonder if that’s my body starting to realise it’s ended? Its hard as I’ve had no bleeding or spotting

OP posts:
MrsT2311 · 27/03/2025 17:18

I’m going through pretty much the same! Can I ask how this ended when you had a repeat scan? X
